Ableton Online

Post by davidnordstrom » Mon Apr 07, 2008 8:19 pm

Maybe this idea has come up before...

I myself feel quite lonely in my room playin my sets by myself. Every now n then i gather up some ppl there and sometimes i even get some gigs.

For lonesome abletoners like me it would be an amazing experience to be able to play my sets online and together wt ppl from around the world.

In the same manner as Counterstrike and COD, Ableton users should have an online interface that allowed them to log onto a server and jam wt eachother.

Listeners could tune in and rate the performances and exchange tips n tricks wt one another. Musicians could have the possibility to see how other Live users arrange their sets and settings. Multiple back-2-back where Live users take turn to play.

Basically: theres no end to the possibilities! Why havent Ableton done anything about this?

Probably because the bandwidth needed would be prohibitive at the moment. Take a look at how much space your livesets take up. You could send midi though...

there is a program out there called Ninja that will allow you to link up across the web.

The forum idea would rock ass!
Computer games don't effect kids... If Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music

it's a good idea but i would have thought that the latency between users would make it difficult to jam with someone online.
an ableton based site for mixes and recorded performances would be cool

maybe an online gameclient... have the game running on a server maybe. Ill let the ableton crew think about that.
Meanwhile lets brainstorm about the features! :U should be able to book a session-time on a schedule and play it on streamin radiochannels on this community

the latency needn't be an issue, if the required audio is sent as lossless compressed before you start then only the 'trigger' signals are required to be sent after that. If I send a signal to you that says "play clip called 'breakbeat' on track 1" signal to your remote copy then both our respective copies will start to play that clip.

Midi is has a bandwidth of 3000 bytes per second (2.92 kb persecond), and that's quite doable over the internet I think. Latency could be nasty, probably up to 300 milliseconds. But pinging the Ableton server from here I get 50 ms, which is fine.

Of course a 'solo' played in realtime would not be possible, but perhaps some ideas could be stolen from ninjam for that. But for triggering clips and mixing it would be fine.

You are all thinking of this for jamming with buddies, right?
If not - the issue of controlling such a "virtual public drum circle ion the park" would need to be addressed.
And if so, Isn't that already available? Can't remember but I'm sure I heard of such a thing.. or similar.

I'm currently working on a "that one fucker who can't keep in time and couldn't give a fuck"-seeking missile

"but dude, it's not about playing in time with *everyone else*, it's about playing in time with yourself and the universe, man..."
