padkontrol mods
padkontrol mods
i'm trying to decide between the mpd 32 and padkontrol at the moment. i was set on the mpd32 until i watched the nativekontrol live video for ableton use. i was pretty impressed, and seeing as its cheaper than the mpd32, looks like you can get a whole lot more use out of that unit. my question is what makes the padkontrol "hackable" so to speak? is the akai capable of things of that nature, just no one has done it yet? the poor mans monome is very cool also, even though i have no idea what the actual unit does heh.

I have neither yet, so I know I'm just talking out of my pie hole
The MPD32, OTOH, works right out of the box with templates in standard form. I think this is good because the MPD32 has enough physical controls to get you making music right on the go whereas the PadKontrol seems geared now more towards exploring various configurations if you know what I mean. For example, the MPD32 has 8 (with the possiblity of 24 with banks) on/off switches whereas the PadKontrol has the possibly of being setup up for controlling 8 or more on/off software switches.
If I'm not mistaken MAX/MSP is needed to get the PadKontrol into it's native mode; however, this mode uses sys ex data, not midi CC data so
that is something to take into consideration.
As far as the MPD32, I'm not sure. Someone else can elaborate on this.
Setting up mulitple configurations using various software in the native mode on the PadKontrol looks very interesting; however, the MPD32 looks nice to have using it as it was intended--with templates and such.
I mean, you have to also remember, the padKontrol was not designed/released with all these new hacks. Not that that's a bad think, but just that both have been released to work a certain way with various software and you should judge how that would work for you at the outset.
so pretty much for the mpd32 i dont need to buy a program like max/msp or nativekontrol to assign random things? i can just edit the templates how i like out of the box because of the faders/knobs? but on the other hand i can't turn it into a poor mans monome or other creative things of that nature. we need some vids on people using the 32 in action! thanks for your post circuit.

check these vids out..

I have one, and like you faced the same choice. After seeing these vids I walked out and got one that day. In the past I had an MPC 2000 which was a wiked piece of kit. I haven't been able to control Live as well until I bought this for my beats - it feels very responsive..
I do not - at all - regret my purchase. The padKontrol is far more advanced..
If you want knobs and stuff, there's plenty of other options out there and I'd recommend either one of the faderfox modules or the novation remote (without the keyboard - if you've got a keyboard already).
Hope this helps.

There are templates, and a PadKontrol template editor as well... The PadKontrol has 16 scenes, which you can switch between using buttons on the control.mitchell wrote:so pretty much for the mpd32 i dont need to buy a program like max/msp or nativekontrol to assign random things? i can just edit the templates how i like out of the box because of the faders/knobs? but on the other hand i can't turn it into a poor mans monome or other creative things of that nature. we need some vids on people using the 32 in action! thanks for your post circuit.
You can load or dump each individual scene, or all the scenes, using the PadKontrol software.

same post in other topic, sorry not lazy but not too many time (got to work a bit, nah?
)
padkontrol + farmpad (free mac app) =
you do what you want with it.
imagine you got a padkontrol and you get rid off what's inside programmed, rid of the text on the buttons.
you can with farmpad totally reprogram it, with the pad lights feedback received from live. you can have 4*16 scenes of 16 pads each, and all, ALL the buttons and knobs are also assignable as parts OF EACH scene, or not, and send controls, or notes, and be part of mute/retriggers groups, or not, or, or, or, or,...
i.e:
yesterday I was configuring pads to trigger scenes, and I have suddenly the wish to have a visual feedback of the metronome, kind of 1 - 2 - 3 - 4,
so I just programmed 4 buttons of the left part of the padkontrol to be lighted by 4 little 1 note empty midi clips that make a "4 following clip suite".
now I got visual metronome on my hacked padkontrol...
what's next ???
PADKONTROL IS THE MONOME OF THE POOR, but with a really good PAD behavior (velocity curves, sensitive, etc.)
go buy one
PS: FARMPAD IS MAC ONLY, but there are some others on XP... good luck

I have a mikrocontrol in front of me right now, and have been meaning to hack it since forever... been thinking about an integrated step sequencer pluggo or something. Not going to happen any time soon though :-/andydes wrote:Are these hacks available on the microcontrol?
Thinking of getting a pad controller, but wouldn't mind some aditional knobs and sliders as well. Shame about the tiny keys though.
