Deleting selected clip via MIDI

Post by rab » Fri Sep 10, 2004 10:36 pm

It would be nice if Live allowed users to map a MIDI message to the "delete clip" function. I
currently have to lean over to the computer and tap the "delete" key after fudging it during
a clip recording. I realize there are 3rd party utilities (MIDI-OX, controlAID, etc) that can map
keystrokes to MIDI messages, but this seems like a critical piece of functionality that is missing
from Live. The fewer pieces of software I am required to run in order for my setup to meet my
needs, the better. I can't imagine it would be that hard to implement.

How about it? Thanks for listening.

Absolutely agree this is needed. How about a flexible midi mapper buit into Live itself to do what we now have to do with midi-ox/midi-yoke?

On a related subject, we also need a way to 'select' a clip via midi, say you recorded a new clip and you want to delete it, but the newly recorded clip is not highlighted. Seems like you still have to reach for the mouse which is very disruptive to the flow of a live gig. Maybe the solution is to automatically highlight the clip being recorded? Is there currently a way to do this?

Yes, some more control over MIDI would be nice (for instance, limit the range of a MIDI
controller). But let's not get ahead of ourselves - much of the MIDI controller hardware out
there can do most of what's needed already, but it can't get LIVE to delete a clip. I wouldn't
want to jeopardize this bill with too many rider amendments...

There's an option in the preferences to select a clip upon launch. This will do what you need. If
you need to select a clip that isn't currently being recorded, trigger its play slot. When it starts
playing again (depending on what your quantization is), it will be selected (though in live 3.0.4
there seems to be a bug where the clip isn't actually selected in this manner).

It's also broken in 4.0.1 it seems. At least it doesn't work when you trigger a clip via midi.

Actually I found the solution to this last night. If the track is record-enabled, then this works
properly. If it isn't record-enabled, the clip is not selected if it is fired via MIDI, regardless of
the "select clip on launch" preference setting.

Abletons: any reason for this? Or is it a bug?

Hmmm... for me it doesn't work even if record-enabled (on 4.0.1).
