My gf bought an H4 recently and we're both very impressed with it. The amount of features packed into such a small unit is amazing really. We're going travelling soon and the H4 is the smallest mobile studio you could imagine! The interface takes some getting used to but the internal mics are great and the 4 track is easy to use and ideal for sketching ideas on the road.
Theres a lot of stuff out there about the H4s high noise level when using phantom power, batteries and an external mic. I tested it with my SE2A though and the recording was spot on. I'm really impressed with the H4!
@babkubwa - i dont think there is a monitoring volume control on the H4 itself if you're using the audio interface and the mics. I could be wrong though. The 4 track is indeed mono and you could record 3 mono vox over a beat, yes. My gf is a more of a 'traditional' musician and likes functionality and ease of getting an idea down and got on really well with the H4's 4 track.
I test drove a mates H2 recently and that was equally impressive. The interface is much more intuitive and the 4 way mics give a nice impression of surround sound. The audio interface on both devices seems perfectly up to the job, too.
Personally I'm sticking to my trusty iRiver H120 with my new Soundman OKM binaural mics, a good little setup. The OKMs are amazing and really good fun, perfect for discreet field recordings especially when walking or on the move, etc.

You may want to read the following article:
http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/pub/a/o ... urround101
Two free plugins, H2-Zoo and Zoom2Five, convert the H2's dual stereo files into 5.1 files.
Thanks Timur, I read that last week and it decided me on the H2.
And then my brother mentioned that he is a Zoom reseller, so that
really decided it.
Of course Live doesn't really have any surround mixing capabilities, and I'm not really that bothered, but I certainly like having the option of having all the 4 mics recorded into 24bit on a single handy device. I'm actually more likely to use the middle and side ability than the quad features.

Nice article there. Think I'm all set for the quadraphonic action too.

I've not heard back from him on that, as he's not got hold of them yet.
But as it's a small business he runs from home I doubt he's going to be cutting any outrageously cheapo deals to anyone who isn't his brother. Sorry. I bet he sells them at not much cheaper than you will find anywhere else. If I know him it will be 2 pence cheaper than the current cheapest supplier!
I'll let you know if he ever gets them in stock though.
myself I don't fancy being a reseller for anything.

no worries mate - was just being cheeky and trying my luck! £138 from PlanetGizmo.co.uk seems pretty fantastic anyway for what it is. think I'll be ordering mine any minute!

+1 on Edirol R-09 - no XLR, but the built-in mic quality, battery options and life (AA - rechargable or not), and navigation all kick arse.

That's why I said "The owners of this device usually give praise to its simple-to-navigate operation via the cool-looking display, and to the sound quality of its built-in stereo condenser mics."

yeah just got the sony pcm-d50 myself along with my father . we both just purchased live 7 also . Lottsa fun for original sound design!!!!!
Also in the usa if you need a case for it go to walmart in the computer dept and they have a calculator case for 10 bucks that fits it perfect!!
Got a nice mini tripod for 10 bucks also for it . I had the edirol and really liked it but it was slightly noisy for me . Also i dropped it once and it blew apart!! so i was under my 30 day return deal at g.c and ordered the sony .got it for 460 out the door

Trying to sell a guitar of mine, then I'm going to pick up a d50 to replace my hd-p2.

I stand corrected.
+1 on Sales Dude's Assessment.
But I'll still stand firm on liking the AA batteries over the shite rechargables in the original M-Audio MicroTrack.
Have I added enough to the conversation now?
