is it possible to SWING the FOLLOW ACTION function itself?

Post by intrepid traveller » Wed Apr 23, 2008 11:04 pm

say i have a bunch of clips and i'm using 'follow action' set to a 16th note, so that a new clip is triggered every 16th note... i was wondering if it is possible to swing the actual triggering of the clips... i obviously know that the MIDI and audio content WITHIN the clip can be swung, but i'm wondering if the actual 'follow action' function itself can be swung... this would be really really useful in creating randomized algorithmic beats, especially with single shot samples...

dont think so, but you could set up your own follow actions with ghost/dummy clips and MIDI yoke/IAC bus/MID loopback ho hum...The notes in the dummy clips will swing...

that sounds really complicated...

:)

right now, i've just been resampling the audio back into live and then swinging the audio... but obviously there are some artifacts in the audio when you swing things this way...

i really wish you swing beat repeat too...

maybe you can work in ridiculously fast tempos, (not really, but using high tempo values)

so that the sixteenth intervals become shorter and shorter periods of time

??

Its not too complicated. but also, the arp has swing, you could slice to drum rack/sampler, then trigger with the arp...do an arp->random( round robin mode )... Swing on Beat repeat would be cool, id def like to see beat repeat updated at some point. there should be swing on everything...

swing on everything would be good, that's for sure! it kind of kills the groove otherwise...

i suppose i could slice to MIDI, but the problem is my randomized jams are way too long to be sliced to 16th notes. there just isn't enough room on the drum racks at that resolution...

see other thread - tempo increase is functional as a workaround, if you can handle a little math ;)

i haven't put this together yet, but i have thought of making something similar to follow actions that is basically a midi-note triggered gate. a random arp would pump out notes and different audio tracks would receive the different gates, opening and closing.
i play all the audio tracks simultaneously, but only one track would sound at a time due to the controlled gate.
this requires using the side-chain trigger on the ableton gate device.
when I get around to buiding this thing, I will post it. Ha, could take months (i'm a procrastinator).
anyways, this technique would be able to swing, and also, in principle, "cross-fade"

that sounds really cool andrew.

i'm all about randomized beats.

anyone interested in hearing what i've come up with so far using my technique? i can post it to yousendit.com.

it's pretty much instant autechre and richard devine...
