re: what is ASIO?
once you select ASIO in ableton's prefernces/audio, things should work and thats all you need to know.
you'll see something similar to this

WOW

I changed the driver type from MME/DierectX to ASIO & boom... it works great now.

this is what I get now

Buffer Size = 256 Samples
Input Latency 8.21 ms
Output Latency = 8.21 ms

It was already set to 256 when I changed the driver to ASIO... should i just keep it where it is or should I try going down more? It seems to start very fast now.

Sweet, I win the bet!

The tradeoff will be this:

Low Buffer settings: audio playback might stutter on playback, but you get low latency when recording (a better feel)
High Buffer settings: playback will be stable, less pront to clicks and blips... but that "feel" upon recording will be more disconnected.

Set your levels to where you can play back 20 tracks of audio without dropouts or stutters, but dont have a large gap between the time you make a sound versus when you hear it.
