Can Live 4 control external harware via midi?

Post by Razzlesnaz » Wed Sep 15, 2004 9:39 pm

I am at the point where i want to integrate harware into my softstudio. I bought a MC 303 and want to control this puppy with my softare as the master. Is live 4 the right choice? I was looking at Cubase SX/SL 2 and SOnar 3. ALso what midi card or ables would i need to conenct the computer to the harware. I have a damn M-box already.

if you want my opinion, forget about controlling an MC303 with midi. it really sucks. basically, you can just use it as a soundbank. and if you've got a computer, you'll find you can get much better sounds from it than from an MC303 not tweaked.
MC303 is good as standalone, and you can also use it to control other hardware (only to send note on messages though). but just don't waste your time trying to remotely control it, its midi implementation is poorer than poor.
i know this is probably not what you want to hear, but it's the (sad) truth.

Keep ya pants on...a little research would tell you that Live controls external hardware just fine...I have it playing and tweaking a Korg MS2000 as I write. You can also send midi clock etc to sync your machines. Midi being new to Live means there are still a few details to iron out (ie I'm still looking how to edit cc data you've recorded...more esearch ) but for the most part it's AMAZING. Why not just download the demo and try ir for yourself??

I hate to say it, Razzlesnaz, but I think Peeddrroo is right. You will face the same problems with cubase, iirc.

maybe not just your opinion. i believe it's widely accepted that the midi implementation on the mc303 is garbage.

By reading this enlightening discussion I actually got inspired to take my old MC 303 down from the shelf where it has been collecting dust for some years and try it as a midi controller for Live. Thanks for the tip! ;-D
