Advice for making beefier/fatter sounding soft synth sounds

w so any tips on how to get a fatter/beffness sound that way would be cool. i guess if u like detune the oscillators u get a fatter sound.O

Sure you can process the hell outta sounds until the cows come home, but I've always found my beefiest soundings synths always came from a good use of layering sounds. Example:

Say you wanted to make a really really mean sounding bassline. First take you main synth sound and use that as say your main synth layer. Once your happy with that sound, duplicate the MIDI trak in live afew times, and then start tweeking the tracks you duplicated. Afew things you can start playing with is the filter settings, the micro-tuning of the OSC section to help add abit of unison fatness, maybe a touch of LFO action to the phase of the OSC, or even use some distortion/lofi action to really grunge up the sound.

Just a thought, hope this helps point you in a differnet direction then just buying more gear and/or crap you don't need.

As the Schippmann? Unfortunately not. Not even half as close.

Better off getting an outboard filter that has some character to it like the M-Resonator I originally posted, or as someone just said the Sherman Filterbank. But nothing can touch the Schippmann outboard or vst for what it does.

there is a free plug in from SSL on their website. It's supposed to be for Drum treatment but I find that using one instance on my Arutia basss tones makes them really stand out and SOUND very "analog" in the mix, even though it may not actually be...

I love using virtual guitar amps on my soft synths. A bit of amping, some cuts and boosts with EQ8, add the vinyl distortion on the end for a bit more high-end sizzle. plenty of things to do.

hey while were at it, maybe it'd be great to get some recommendations on guitar amps (of course i mean VST/AU emulations of amps, cuz i ain't goin out and buying a massive amp lol.

i use guitar rig 2 from native instruments, that has a great number of modules that you chain together. pretty sure there is a trial version on the NI website that you could check out before you purchase, as its quite expensive, but it has more uses than just on guitar.

as for free vst's, i cant help out, but i'd like to check out some too.

For guitar-esque grind, I've always liked the plugs from Wurr Audio - makers of the infamous Green Machine Amp which is a gem in itself. Check the demo if you get the chance.

As far as the freebies go:

Tube Booster
While it's not a guitar cab emulator, I find that the Tube Booster can be pretty handy to round off an aggressive layered combo.

Green Wah
A different sound to many of the other wah's I have used/heard. Worth a look if that's your thing.

Those are some high-quality and expensive boutique filters, better make sure your studio soundcard isn't some $200 silver turd with '410' written on the front. Unless you're actually going for the polished-turd sound. Or is it the turded-polish sound ?

Turn up the cutoff, Use some double saw waveforms, Get a fat Chorus plug in, Put a Saturator on the bassline and start turning knobs.

Be creative with it, there's a million different ways.
