Problem adjusting the buffer

Post by beats me » Wed Apr 30, 2008 3:40 am

I'm running 7.0.5 but I also remember this being a problem on the last version. When I go to adjust the buffer in the preferences the cursor disappears, turns to the beach ball, and after a long while the buffer does change but it's based on I don't know what because it never actually shows adjustments being made. The new buffer size just appears and most times it to either extreme. It's just based on whatever movement I made I guess. Also typing in the buffer size goes through the same above mentioned stall but it does set it to whatever I typed in.

I'm on a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.4 with a Presonus Firepod interface.

Exact same problem here:

Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa) 2.2GHz
OS X 10.5.2
4GB Ram
160GB HD

I also noticed this start happening as of 7.0.4. Very frustrating.

noticed same problem here but only recently. I have found that it only seems to happen when I have plugins running. Could you other two try with an empty set, and then with plugin?

Well, have updated firmware and checked again - seems to only happen now with AU plugins. VSTs are fine. And if set is all audio - no probs. Hmmm?

This is not good. I could try with an empty set but the problem is I rely heavily on fiddling with the buffer because the set gets to a certain point and I have to. I don't know what that point is exactly but there are plenty of plugins going on and I don't know what my ideal buffer setting is because it seems to change from set to set.

I just repeated the same problem in 7.0.3 which I reverted to because of some other BS issues with 7.0.5. You'd think something like this wouldn't happen when they are up to a .5 update. How much more basic can a need be, to be able to adjust the buffer in order to compensate for all the other glitching issues. Come on!

I have decided to go back to 7.2 for the time being as that is glitchless for me on the buffer side of things. *sigh* hopefully this will get rectified soon.

Hey beats,

does it work correctly if you type in the buffer using the keyboard?
Does the problem when trying to change the buffer using the mouse only happen if Live is playing at the same time?
AFAIK a lot of hosts don't even allow that and you can only change the buffer after stopping playback.

Best,

Dunno if it's related, but ever since L7.0.1, I've had problems adjusting the buffer on the fly, e.g. one of my earlier posts: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=83028
The thing is it definitely worked fine in L6. Something broke on the way to L7, it appears...

Hey Dom, On my machine with 7.0.5 the problem happens even when play is stopped. However, this is only if I have an AU plugin in the set. If plain audio, or vsts - no sweat. 7.0.2 works fine in all situations.

When I type the buffer in it still lags forever making the change. I also have the problem whether the track is playing or not. I haven't really narrowed it down to what or when the problem starts. I'll just have a set with audio, VST, AU, and Live's effects and instruments going and I only go to the buffer when everything starts glitching.

OMG! This is so not a good post for the return of the iPorn Bots. This is a serious issue. Damnit.
