MIDI Bank Changes // Triton

Post by agridley » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:08 am

Hey Everyone. I'm having trouble getting Live 4.0 to execute BANK changes on my triton keyboard.

I know I have most of the connections correct as I can execute PROGRAM changes easily between the two.

Any tips? I've read my mannuals to the point of memorization - still no luck.

Thanks.

Andy

Take it you've tried tweaking the bank/sub bank/program boxes in the 'notes' box in the midi clip edit window?

Yes. I've changed the numbers around of both the "Bank" and "Program" menu bars within the "notes" section of the midi editor.

The program selector works great - triton will immediately load whatever program I select via Live.

The bank selector is another story - won't work.

So, I'm learning that to solve this problem I need to verify the midi messages being sent from LIVE when I use the pulldown menus for BANK, SUB-BANK, and PROGRAM in the midi editor.

So far, I can't find that info on-line or in my mannual. Does anyone know what LIVE's MIDI messages are (i.e. what is being sent to my Triton?)

Thanks - any help would be greatly appreciated

Andy

i've been going on about this for a while. but my posts got lost somewhere.

Try this. if you set your bankmessages in a clip. and the message for another bank in another clip. when triggering the clips, nothing happens.

Stop live's playback. trigger the clip and the message's are correct. this sucks. At first i thought it was my wrong doing, but i'm glad to see someone else in trouble.

As you said. programs change in real-time. banks dont.

I have this issue with a mc-909

So when you say "Set your bankmessages in a clip. and the message for another bank in another clip" do you simply mean selecting a number or do you actually rename the clip with the midi message?

"Stop live's playback. trigger the clip and the message's are correct. this sucks. At first i thought it was my wrong doing, but i'm glad to see someone else in trouble."

Sorry - new to the program - what do you mean by "trigger?" You mean push the little play button or do you mean selecting the right midi program?

Keep talking to me... so awesome to finally find someone who knows these problems!!!

Thanks!

Andy

With the bank messages i mean this.

Lets say i wonna have a clip that plays "bank a"
underneath it in the same track i want a clip that plays "bank b"

I can only change bank a to bank b by stopping Live's playback and launch (trigger) the second clip.

Instead with program changes: they just change on my synth as as i change them in Live.

i do not select random numbers for the bank messages.
I know wich bank and subbank messages need to be sent in order to change to bank a, b, c,....

Cool. I got you.

So, can you get around this by having seperate midi tracks which you pre-determine as "only going to play bank a" and "only going to play bank b"? That would solve it right? Just have two different midi tracks to play two different banks simultaneously?

As far as "knowing which midi messages" to select in order to get the appropriate bank changes.... Are your selections for appropriate midi messages simply numeric combo's from Live's pull-down BANK, SUBANK, and PROGRAM bars? In other words, are you saying that you simply know whic numbers to pick to send the right midi message for bank selection or are you typing in a midi message (i.e "- CC#0 value "00" - CC#32 value "01) as the name of your clip?

If the first, then how do you know these numeric combos?

Thanks.

You're right. the workaround for this is having seperate tracks for banks. The main reason i would love to switch banks in every track is this.

when i export a midi file from my hardware sequencer, it contains all data. (cc, bank, notes's,..)
basicly i could switch the patterns i made regardless of the bank the track is playing.

As for labeling. i name the clips by patchname or specific effects (velo-tb CO = means velocity sensitive tb-303 patch with cutoff automation)

And i know these numeric codes because i read my sequencer's manual :)

It's all good. just a little obstacle that could be fixed with the new update (havent tried this yet with 4,03)

anyway. it's loads of fun trigggering patterns from Live. i got that faderfox lx1 module with all the buttons. makes it sort of easy to make awesome drumpatterns. and dont get me started over the following actions 8)

cheers

Cool. So after pulling my hair out, mulitiple forums, and yes - I did read my mannuals ; )

I'm able to switch Banks. Not intutive and neither my Korg or Live speak in great detail how to problem solve. Thanks for your input.

Korg Bank/Program = Live's Numeric Menu
----------------------- -----------------------
A 03 = BANK 1 SUBBANK 1 PROGRAM 4
B 03 = BANK 1 SUBANK 2 PROGRAM 4
<etc>
G 03 = BANK 122 SUBBANK1 PROGRAM 3
G(1) 03 = BANK 122 SUBBANK 2 PROGRAM 3

You seem to have some serious fun with MIDI. Any good resources for someone just getting started?

Thanks again for your thoughts.

the Live tutorials are a good way to start.
or try this.
Make different tracks: one with bassdr, one with snare, clap, .....
Assign those different clips to a midi keyboard. (or another midi controller) now mess around with the differen clips. maybe record some loops.

You can also make blank clips that just change the program of the track. or just make clips with different programs.

assign follow actions to some clips (maybe for a snare roll that triggers bassdr at the end)

anyway. the more you mess around, the more rythms you'll discover.
