Seriously, read the comments I was responding to. Calling out DEMF as being something only Americans are into is preety irresponsible... don't you think?

If we acted like it was an exclusive American thing and only booked artists from the states we would be snobs for not including the rest of the world. Detroit throws a party for the entire globe featuring a plethora of international artists and this guy thinks it's something only Americans should know about!

Seeing that I'm two hours away from the festival and it has been drawing pretty huge crowds the last eight years maybe it's very American of me to assume the rest of the world knows what DEMF stands for.

Then again, I know what Glastonbury, All Tomorrow's Parties, Reading Fest, I Love Techno, Sonar and Mutek are all about too...

Binary Star broke up and Myself and One Be Lo of Binary Star did an album with a few other catsd called Waterworld Too(2), that was on Subterraneous records, and then Me and Senim Silla(of Binary Star) formed Sleeper Cell Records and dropped an all exclusive, self produced mix CD entitled "Peace or Piece" you can order them both on my myspace.com page

Yeah, Binary Star was real nice. My friend Paul used to play the first album for me all the time.

He turned me on to a lot of good hip hop.

I'll be there. I'm a Detroiter, and have been every year since the beginning. Really though, it is an amazing weekend and an excellent time. Last year I met people from Germany, UK, Brazil, Japan, Australia and all over the US and Canada to be there for the festival.

I can't say enough about it; every year when it ends I just think to myself "Just 365 days till the next one..."

in fairness the lineup does look great. Sonar has gone downhill IMo. too much mnml bollox. maybe one year ill travel ver for this..

Are you referencing the fact that the numbers have dropped dramatically? That's probably because they actually started charging for it.

To be fair the first three years they had pretty inaccurate counts, due largely to the fact that they didn't have tickets, so chances are it was never quite that high. Still, 2007 had a much larger attendance than 2006 (which was probably the worst year as they were going through a lot of changes on how the festival was put together) and this year they're saying they're already beating last years ticket sales. The crowd is always great each year and it's a really fun weekend. Everyone I've talked to who went always left happy! (Especially if you make it to some of the afterparties!)

1.7 million is nearly twice the current population of the city of Detroit. At its peak in the 1950's, Detroit was home to less than 2 million people.

(Not the metro area, mind you, but the city itself)

Or consider this:

Record attendance for Jazzfest, which has been going on in New Orleans for nearly 40 years, was somewhere just north of half a million and that festival goes on for two weeks.

Did you mean "sales" instead of "attendance"? Even so, I'm not sure those numbers are correct.

The first 5 or so years were free.

You do know there is this thing called travel where people get in a form of transportation such as a plane, bus, train, or even their own automobile and go to another city. They might even go to a city just because there's a major event going on and it's free.
