i use a bunch of different phones...audio-technica ath-m40fs, stanton dj2000, shure e3s. i tend to work at night a lot and i often make the kind of music that would drive my wife and kid batsh*t. i tend to switch between the different phones quite a bit in order to get a better perspective on what the mix sounds like. not ideal, but i don't have much of a choice for now.
the e3s are pretty cool...block out a lot of sound (handy when working in certain environments), sound excellent, and are very small and portable.
they bug a lot of peoples' ears, though - i got these used off a friend who couldn't get a comfortable fit with them. anyway...i use these in the studio, take them along to live gigs in case the monitors stink (which is pretty often), and use them for field-recording as well.
the stantons are cheap, but sound pretty good for the money. i originally bought them to have a set of on-the-go phones because they fold up and i wouldn't be too bothered if they got destroyed. anyway...they've been essentially replaced by the e3s.
the ath sound great...good work-horse set of studio phones, but i don't use them anywhere else.
...i guess that my point is that i'd have a look at the e3s if you can get them to fit your ears and if portability/sound isolation is at all relevant. you'll get pretty used to cleaning the ear-guck off them after a while.
