Tiggering Slices within a Sample? Similar to REX players

Post by John Pisciotta » Tue Sep 07, 2004 12:22 am

Is there a way trigger hitz from within a sample. Similar to Reasons REX player. It would be great if Live could do this and save a few steps:

1. chop sample
2. Import into recyle,
3. export as a REX file,
4. import in to reason.

It seems like Live is really close to being able to do this. Maybe it already can??

thanks in advance for thoughts and input into this.

Hi John

There is no easy way to do this which will give you the ease and functionality of Reason's Rex player......however you can isolate hits within a sample as follows

1. Drag a file into a clip slot in the session view and set loop points around the hit you want (this can be any length up to ten seconds)

2. Set up an Impulse track and drag the clip you prepared above into one of impulse's slots.

3. Trigger via midi

4. Repeat these steps using hits from the same audio file or a different one till you have filled the impulse slots

Of course there's nothing to stop you loading prepared rex slices into impulse and using the rex midi file to trigger.....but you are limited to 8 slices (i.e only two beats of sixteenths)

I think that some sort of REX functionality will be on the way in future updates but for now it's probably easier to use Reason's Rex player rewired.......

On OSX or Windows XP U can try pHATmatik Pro..
Recycle and Rex player in one VSTi or AU plug.
Exporting the midi files via drag and drop isn't possible (yet?) since Live doesn't support (yet?)..
Go to www.glaresoft.com to check it out
There are some threads on pHATmatik pro in this forum too on problems with Live 4 and the pHAT (which are resolved now, I believe)...

I'm with Mammalax...

My approach is I take a drum loop, for example, bring it into the Arranger view (that's the one I use most of the time, rarely Session), make sure the hits are well lined up and warped to my grid, unfold the track so I can see the waveform, then CTRL+E on the transients, which separates my loop into however many slices I want (the whole process is very quick).

Load an Impulse on midi track, put your slices in each of the slots annd bang away...

Alternatively, you can also just midi-trigger the slices from the Session view slots.
