AviSynth is the father of all. A true warrior. Once you understand how it works you can start doing magic without having to know how to script. You can apply effects for example, process videos using other peoples' scripts you find from forums and communities or use it for frameserving only. I work in the video industry and AviSynth has given me full working solutions to problems I occasionaly have for free. Most of the times the solutions are even better than spending the money for 'pro' equipment/software. Let's say you want to encode a video but your encoder can only accept .avi input.
