forge wrote: see I don;t agree with this - for the simple reason that if you think about it the technological level we are at now really has happened over the space of about 350 years since the industrial revolution

before then technology made really pretty small steps and technology wasn't a great deal different to what the Romans, Greeks and Persians etc had

so it is possible to go from inventing steam power to space flight and mapping the human DNA in under 400 years

that is an unbelievably small amount of time in cosmic terms to make such a massive leap

what if one other planet didn't have giant dangerous reptiles and the bi-pedal life forms with clever brains evolved 400 million years earlier?

and if the universe really is infinite then there are probably billions of worlds like this

I think tone deft's picture probably sums it up - we're probably being observed, but any higher intelligence must surely see there are too many reasons to not interfere - first there;s the chance we'll nuke them, but second they probably want to see what we do - it must be fascinating
i dont think you appreciate the scale of the universe. our nearest star is about 5 light years away. thats 5 years travel time at the speed of light. an average star is literally thousands of light years away. so even if they were sending us the encylopedia galactica encoded into the wavelength of light, it would take thousands, tens of thousands or millions of years to reach us.

plenty of time for a civilisation to grow, develop and die out from its own hand or an extinction event.
(don't look now but your post count is 666! )

that is based on the assumption that travel will involve A to B in the linear way we perceive it now

my point is we have only got to where we are now in about 350 years so we probably have a very long way to go and a lot to learn - one thing we know for sure is there is a hell of a lot that we can't explain

to me it seems perfectly feasible that there could be a form of travel that doesnt involve the 3 dimensional 'miles per hour' limitations we are used to

anyone who's had a psychedelic experience of any kind has probably had some kind of experience of the illogical simultaneous appreciation of the vastness of the universe while at the same time seeing the wholeness and completeness of the universe as one great entity

like the whole fractal thing where any one point is basically any other point at once - the same shit Buddha was on about (and many others)

okay so I sound like a tripped out hippy now, but I'm just saying that I think with logic alone based on our current understanding of physics we're just nowhere near having all the answers, so maybe it will possible one day to somehow figure out how [tachyons - or whatever it is] work and harness the force that makes them work and use it on a small enough scale to power a flying saucer

you dont know that will never happen!

im never saying never! i completely agree with you about most of what youve said. the work being done in non local particle interaction is incredibly exciting and could lead to anything. im just saying that given each species very short time frame to get this right, its just unlikely, as opposed to statistically inevitable. remember we are overdue for an extinction event, comets, bombardments of stellar radiation, colliding with other galaxies. its a dangerous universe out there, not very hospitable to life as we know or can imagine it. say we get hammered by a comet/asteroid in the next 200 years, would that be enough time for us to develop interstellar and faster than light travel? maybe, maybe not.

ive always loved the Dune idea. navigators using the Spice to help their minds move ships inbetween interstellar space. its not as far fetched as some of the really weird stuff in quantum physics.

well I guess the question is really down to whether this is actually possible in the universe - I totally agree it will not be possible to travel those distances based on our current understanding of travel, so the question is whether there is actually any possibility that there are ways to jump through space

if it is possible then I think it;s probably an inevitability that someone somewhere in those zillions of stars has figured it out

you don;t know, we might have it on earth in 50 years - who knows what the LHC will uncover or lead to

given Intel were talking about 80 core computers in 5 years maybe a year ago then in 50 years the number crunching power will be unfathomable to us now really

maybe I'm just a conspiracy freak who likes imagining these kind of things, but I personally think we are already being studied

think about this for another stoner tripout thought - people like Derren Brown - hypnotists and psychological illusionists - here on earth now can influence our perception and make us completely not see things

if there are more evolved beings around then they may have mastery over telekinetic energy and have the ability to exert such things on us easily - in fact this is exactly the sort of things 'abductees' regularly report

I've also read accounts of people who say they've stumbled on landed craft with weird tall grey alien looking people who were doing a strange kind of jumping into thin air and vanishing then re-appearing

then there's the Raelians who think the aliens look like Japanese people

high chance all of them are fruit cakes, but there seem to be a lot of these anecdotes around, many from otherwise solid people

we'll probably never find out though, its just fun to think about

forge and pants - omfg put... the... bongs... down!!

consider this, there are two extremes of life forms we can find.
- aome form of bacteria/algae/single celled life form, IMO this is more likely as all advanced lifeforms come from simple ones (evolution.)

- a roaming predatory species that finds us because we're still BLASTING space with TV and radio waves. there's a book out there that suggests that advanced civilizations are QUIET so they're not found and pillaged and we're making a big mistake.

or for you cross huggers - if god made life here, why not elsewhere? jesus isn't coming back, he's on a better planet, he doesn't love you anymore.

Ok first off, your dick is huge, and why is he holding it?

Right.

Anyway, if you need any reference material on how to fight that thing, this should help and good luck with that. Just work on your speed.

In between those extremes are many other possibilities. And its anthrocentric to think that just because we communicate using radio waves that every other society would too. how about an alien race that developed laser communication, or that live under liquid and use gravity waves to communicate? they wouldnt even think of looking in the radio spectrum for that Tiesto podcast.

that's what I mean... half baked.

radio waves and light waves are both electromagnetic energy, light can also manifest as photons (particle/wave duality.) you're just throwing out ideas of buzzwords you've heard. what about aliens that use flux capacitors?

we don't communicate with just radio waves. we use laser communication as well, I know networks can be jumped from building to building that way. we even live underwater.

gravity waves are a separate fundamental force than electromagnetism, one of the weakest forces (weakest I think). not very ideal for a communications protocol.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying it's pedestrian. this is retarded.

right now, i wish i was half baked!

you may want to write a detailed paper refuting the idea to the Professor of Astronomy that I first heard the idea of gravity wave communication from. I bet youre just as qualified as I am (ie not at all) to make assumptions about what may and may not be used for communication between stars. I never pretended to be an published expert in the field, are you?

why the hate? we're having a 'blue sky' session, not prick waving.

agreed on the attitude, I'm a science dork, I've taken physics classes and reading some stuff that doesn't add up is like reading about which color midi cable is warmer.

I'm no expert, it doesn't take an expert to have a basic understanding of physics. besides, you still haven't written anything of substance, just ideas, even now.

here's page on what I was talking about, gravity is a very weak force.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_force
sorry for having a clue, ya know?

IMO it's less about some overcomplicated idea of interdimensional mind expanding pseudo science. it's more like putting a probe on Mars, turning over a rock and seeing an oddly colored mold.

Thanks for noticing. I didn't realize he was holding it until I got back home.
You know what they say about what happens in Vegas.

As for the fight, thanks for the tip. It seems that the double slap to the side of his head worked well.
I've also heard that overacting is his greatest weakness.

I dont have to write anything of substance when we are musing about stuff on an audio forum. get a grip homes. if you want to point me towards your published papers on the impossibility of gravity wave communication im keen to read them. until then ill probably in my enthusiastic amateur way, give creedence to the mainstream Astronomers who say its not impossible, but still very unlikely. i think youre all het up from too many Zeitgeist threads.

upthread, I was trying to introduce the ideas of the Fermi paradox and Drake equation, to those musing about the likelyhood of contact with aliens. pretty mainstream Astronomy.
