MIDI Files and Time Signature Changes - simple question

Post by bottha » Tue May 27, 2008 9:55 pm

I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I create a new set and, in Arrangement view, add some time signature changes. For example: measure 1 is 4/4, measure 2 is 6/16, and measure 3 is 5/8. I click and drag over these 3 bars to select them, then right-click and choose Insert MIDI clip.
OK, so now I double-click the MIDI part in order to edit it. However, when I inspect the MIDI part I see that it is all in 4/4.
Is there any reason that the MIDI part doesn't reflect the time signature changes?
Trying to edit the MIDI part is very difficult otherwise (only way I can think of is to remember the number of 16th notes since the beginning of the piece).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

without testing,

why not create 3 clips instead?

Thanks for the reply. And your suggestion works: I created 3 separate MIDI clips and they show up correctly in the MIDI editor - 4/4 is 4/4 and 6/16 is 6/16 etc. Interesting.

However, the time signature of this tune changes EVERY measure. And it's long, 231 measures. FYI: I am adding a drum part to someone else's tune.

Obviously, I'd prefer not to have 231 clips.

Is it the case that Live's MIDI editor will not recognize when the MIDI clip is in multiple time signatures?

I think tests have shown that live only polls the time sig & changes to it at 16th note intervals, so in extension from that, and based on your own findings, it might be safe to assume that live only bases the midi clip on where the midi clip starts.

A workaround might be to use a basic pattern and then copy and paste this across all the separate clips, and then go into each clip and use stretch midi and further editing. Does depend of course how complex the drumming part you are adding is. ymmv
