I've found XP home less hassle - definitely not 2000 though

win2000 still has to crash on me ... do have the impression here in the forum that XP users have vastly more problems "getting it right" than win2000 users ....

if you buy a laptop with an OEM version or pre-installed/configured machine with XP you'll most likely be fine, but I get the feeling more of the problems have been with upgrades or installs of XP Pro from copies - maybe because of things like winupdate not working properly, or just installing too many things on the machine

I use the OEM XP home that came with my laptop with pretty much all legit software and have very few problems, whereas the studio I work in uses 2000 and frequently pisses me off, sometimes to the point that I take my laptop - although I'm not sure that's not largely down to Cubase SX which seems to be getting less reliable as time goes on.

I guess the point is that the reason I think the likes of pro-tools is so reliable is because it's generally a whole dedicated system - whatever operating system you use the cleaner and less clogged up it is the more stable it will be. If it's a recording only machine, in an ideal world if you only install the operating system and your recording software you'll probably never have a single crash unless it overheats or something. Likewise with editing or Live - if you keep one machine dedicated to it's purpose it will most likely be solid as a rock, but in the real world it doesn't work like that for most of us, so the next best thing is to keep it to a minimum and use as much legit software with the latest updates as possible.

Forge : that's right ... me as well I'm only using legit sw and my box is pretty audio DAW only ... also every plugin - how funky it might be - that crashes in any of the applications I use gets booted out of the box ... .

So I guess a tight selectin of sw is necessary .

My setup is really focused around the idea : how should I have done it in a real hardware studio ... .

Yep mine is an OEM XP pro job.
I took it to AAVIMT - it's just the OS and all software apps for music and that's it.
Like Mbazzy anything that isn't stable isn't on my DAW.
It isn't net connected and it is only used for music.
Haven't crashed it yet - bar two dodgy freeware VSTi's which I removed post haste .
Otherwise it all works great .
