Vista and Live - Glitches
Vista and Live - Glitches
Since I bought a new notebook with Windows Vista preinstalled I now have to deal with this operation system.
When using Ableton Live I always have glitches which means some tracks are left out for some time until the HD-Led in Live is off again.
I bought a 7200 rpm Hitachi Travelstar so datathroughput should not be the problem.
When I watched the ressources overview in Vista it seems that the memory (2 gb) gets full (hard fault) and a pagefile is written on the harddisk which thwarts the whole systems so the 22 stereo tracks in Live cannot be played back correctly.
With Windows XP there has never been a problem - I even played a whole video with Arkaos VJ simultaneosly. Does Vista take so much more memory than XP? (I optimized Vista for audio which means i switched off the backup-function, optimized for background processes, index off, graphic fx off, etc.)
Maybe my graphic card maybe responsible for the swap-file? It is a Geforce 8400 M which has 128 MB memory but also uses the RAM. Does anybody know where to controll the amount of ram it uses? I found nothing in the bios nor in Vista-configuration.
Can anybody help me?

Re: Vista and Live - Glitches
I don't think this is a swap-file problem. The reason why RAM gets filled up is Superfetch. Vista always keeps the file-cache filled. You can try yourself by switching off Superfetch via "Services".wojna wrote:When I watched the ressources overview in Vista it seems that the memory (2 gb) gets full (hard fault) and a pagefile is written on the harddisk which thwarts the whole systems so the 22 stereo tracks in Live cannot be played back correctly.
Concerning Live and Vista: I am very adept at configuring about anything PC, but I did not manage to get this combination running smoothly on three different PCs. The only thing you can try is to activate AERO since this helps alot to make Live running better on Vista (albeit not as good as on XP). Additionally you can also try to switch off Multiprocessor support, but that's a ridiculous "workaround".
Ableton keeps failing to deliver the advertised Vista compatibility I fear. At least I'm waiting for solutions since months.
I just installed Live 7.0.7 and it is running much better now. There was just a short glitch after 5 playbacks.
In the monitorsection auf vista there are less hard faults and the memory is not permanently filled anymore while playback.
I even ran Arkaos VJ simultaneosly. I will try to disable Superfetch later and let you know about the result.
Maybe I will get back the old XP-status ...

Done. I switched back to XP. It took me the whole of monday. But now it is done.
I needed to create an new Windows-XP-Install-CD because on the original disc there was no SATA-Support for my harddisc. But this was no problem. Found a good tutorial and build a new disc with DriverPacks and nLite, so installing became possible.
Funny that ASUS had no drivers at all für my Z53S Notebook on their homepage, but I found out that the XP drivers for Z53Sc also work.
Everything works fine now. Bootup is really quick.
Now CPU-Load in Ableton in the SAME arrangement dropped from 15% to 7% percent. No dropouts at all while Arkaos is simultaniously playing a big videofile. It is wonderful.
F..k Vista!
