can hear and sequence the midi, but cannot "record" it.

yep... a noob question.

So I understand how to send audio signals/channels to the master for eventual rendering, but I cannot send the midi channels to the master.

So while I can play and sequence my midi stuff, and hear it through my speakers (M-audio box), I cannot "record" it anywhere.

I am focusing on the output settings on each midi channel, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

Am simply trying to record a couple of midi-based ideas so i can share with my band.

Thanks.

Midi clips are only instructions and contain no audio. If you are controlling a MIDI instrument plugin with your MIDI tracks, then the audio will come from that instrument - not the MIDI tracks. Simply route the output of that plugin to your master channel.

If you are controlling external gear with your Ableton MIDI tracks, then you will need to record the external instruments back into Ableton.
