trying to use fm7 fx in live

in say logic or cubase, you would insert fm7 on the audio track, then route midi to fm7 from a midi track,

I cannot find a way to do this in live4, i have fm7fx on audio1 and would like to route midi to it, but it isn't available as an option

it needs to be on a midi track.

then you route the audio to it.

Simple answer: Read the instructions.

Long answer: I use a sample configuration to make it more easy.

FM 7 FX:
1. Instert the FM 7 FX into a Audio Track, for example called "1-Audio". This is the track where audio gets transmitted into the FM7.
2. Route "Midi To" of a Midi Track to "1-Audio". Select a Channel in the lower Chooser. Here you create MIDI clips that fire MIDI into the FM7 on the selected chanel.

FM 7 Instrument:
1. Install FM7 into a MIDI Track, for example called "3-MIDI".
2. Select from a Audio track "Audio To" to "3-MIDI" and in the chooser below "FM7".

Note that several versions of FM7 have serious limitations that prevent this from working. I've checked and the newest FM7 VST instrument doesn't show a audio in on Mac. And the newest version of the FM7 Audio Unit has no MIDI in. You should contact Native Instruments about this problems.

I am only given the options of midi tracks by live in the pulldown, no option to send midi to audio tracks, this is the problem

got it working the second way, but i'm still confused as to why the option of routing midi to the fx plug on an audio track wont work

As I mentioned before I believe it is a bug in the FM7. You should contact Native Instruments about that.

I have no problem routing MIDI to an audio track containing the VST plugin Filterizer, so this too would suggest that the problem lies with the FM7 FX.

FM7 FX has always been a problematic little beast... great when it works...!

Prior to the latest NI updates it would not load at all in some hosts..... at least we've got it working in Live to some degree. Better than not at all!

Anyway, I think we can say with some certainty that the problem is in the plug, not in Live.......

for some mysterious reasons, FM7 FX doesn't even show up in OS X Au or VST browser, but it does in OS 9...

BUT, if in OS 9 FM7 seems to work flawlessly, Live is frequently crashing when I have one loaded. Ableton, why??????
As soon as I click on some samples in the browser I crash.

Which means that if I want to use the FM7, I cannot use samples. not very useful

Benshik, FM 7 FX appears on all machines here. Do you really have the newest OS X versions of the FM 7 installed? Which OS X version do you use?

I have no idea what is happening on OS 9. Can you provide some more information? Is there something special with the samples? Does it only crash with the FM 7 custom editor open? Or just FM 7 installed in a track? Please give us a short instructions of how to reproduce the problem. Thanks.

hello Frank,
I think I should be more specific:
On OS X.2.8, I'm actually running a demo version of FM7. I just read that on the demo the audio input is disabled, which maybe explains why I cannot find Fm7 FX in the browser...

I'm not at home right now so I don't know what version of FM7 I am running on OS 9, but it's surely not the latest...
Since I upgraded to Live 4 about 2 weeks ago, I must have crashed more than 30 times

It's still doing the job - I love v4 so much, but yeah it's gettin annoying

How to crash is mysteriously simple: have a FM7 loaded on a midi or audio track (the custom editor open OR not, it doesn't matter)
then browse through samples in Live's browser. it doesn't crash ALL the time, but I noticed the following:
- as soon as I start clicking quickly at samples in the browser, it crashes (almost always).
- It crashes more when I click on short and dry sounds. For example, it will crash more if I browse through my kick drums than in long atmospheric sounds...
I tried lots of different ways to avoid crashing, but all external factors don't seem to have any impact.
All you need is FM7 and your mouse clicking in the browser, whatever else you're doing won't change it... Strange isn't it???
So if I understand well, only a FM7 update could save me from that???
is Live 4.03 now rock solid on OS9 or there are still some issues? Honestly I thought the problem was in Live, so I was patiently waiting for a future live update, coz you at least give them for free!!!

If you are running OS X 10.2.8, then please make sure you have the lastest Quicktime update installed. But I believe the limitation comes with the demo. I am not sure though.

We try to reproduce the problem on OS 9. You should really get the latest free update for the FM7. I can't say if it really helps though. Please report. Thanks.

If you haven't updated yet and your bandwith is limited wait for Live 4.0.4.

I couldn't send MIDI to any of the AU versions of NI FX plugins, but it works fine with the VST versions.
