hi hat loops

Post by glasvegas » Wed Jun 04, 2008 5:21 pm

does anyone know a good source for real hi-hat loops? i'm looking in particular for funky loops, ala the hi hat pattern in the song "house of jealous" lovers by the rapture.
cheers for any help

1. Get some good high hat samples. I don't know if there are any really great ones for free on the internet -- 2 minutes with google didn't locate any.

If all else fails try http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufactu ... nd/TR-707/

707 hats are probably not convincing versions of real high hats, but they're nice cutting sounds that will hold their own in a mix.

2. Load the hats in impulse or drum rack. In drum rack, you can add the open and closed hat samples to a choke group. Do that.

3. draw in a pattern with a closed hat on nearly every 16th note. Put the open hat on the 16ths where there's no closed hat.

4. Set the groove to 'Swing 16' and set the global swing to something like 10. Good ol arbitrary numeric parameters...

there's your funky hat loop.

and play with velocity. as a generic example, take the first 4 hat hit in a row, make the first hit to 100 velocity, second to 70, third to 85, fourth to 65. do that to every 4 hits in a row....
