Live forces Vista aero into Basic mode after screensaver

Post by Simmo » Sat Jun 14, 2008 10:04 am

Live 7 forces Vista Aero into basic mode when the system returns from the screensaver.

To workaround, I have to close live and re-open.

Cheers, Simmo

Screensaver or screen stand-by? Which screensaver?

I think the main question is why are you running Aero and/or a screensaver on a production machine?

Live doesn't run without Aero on several (most?) machines. It's GUI/main thread uses up all CPU resources of one CPU core on Vista in Basic mode. Using Aero brings other performance drawbacks because of its own high priority, but better to lose 5% than losing 50%. Turning Live's priority to "Realtime" overcomes the performance drawbacks of Aero (cause Live's own priority is higher than Aero/DWM's then), but then if Live ever uses up 100% CPU the whole system will hang.

Ableton knows about these problems since january (!), but didn't care to take any closer look at them. Happens with both Nvidia and ATI cards and on different chipset/CPU plattforms.

So until Ableton comes to mind and recognizes that says "Vista compatible" means that it should work on Vista proper: no Aero, no Live.

I've not got one currently (just have it set to turn off the screen @ 10mins idle) but the same thing happened with Mystify and the Vista logo one.

Nvidia 8800 Ultra gfx card, Intel c2q CPU.

In response to ewistrand - The PC isn't just used for audio production (otherwise I'd be using XP x64) so I'm accepting that I'm not going to achieve the same performance as a dedicated machine.

I agree with Timur regarding the Aero/Basic issue with Vista.

Typically I remember reading for tweaking the system to turn off any screen saver as well as set power to be "always on" especially for a laptop.
