midi feedback update on bcr encoders (switching banks)?

Post by R.J.Dubya » Mon Jun 16, 2008 4:28 pm

Hey bcr users,

quick question:

If you midi learn 2 banks of encoders and you switch between the 2 will the encoders rings update to show the current position of the assign parameter?

Ex. You've got the encoders midi learned to the sends of tracks 1-8 and on another bank, you got them mapped to the sends for tracks 9-16. If I'm tweaking away on the first 8 and then switch the bank/preset to the 9-16 set, will I instantly see the right encoder positions for those?

I'm asking because I recently picked up a uc33e, mainly for sends in live performance, but I'm thinking that it would very handy to have the visual feedback when I switch between groups of 8 tracks. If the BCR2000 does this, I may have to take the uc33e back and get a bcr instead.

thanks!

Just tried it - yes they do.

Also it's possible to set the encoders to a stripe of LEDs instead of just the one - might be easier to see a send level that way?

it does...

you just have to it ctrl-m 2 times...or automate it using bomes...
for live to send the midi params out to the new preset...

Not sure what you mean. Everytime you switch between 2 banks on the bcr you have to hit ctrl-m for the encoder rings to update to what you already assigned previously?

yes...in case they changed from the last time you switched presets...

see,
live automatically updates the rings on the current preset...
(if say...you moved a param with the mouse...)

encoder 'groups' on the active preset are updated as well ...though 'hidden' ...

if u switch presets... and the leds are not updated...

then hit ctrl-m...twice...and they will be...

oh.
and...'auto-map' updated when u grab a hold of a device...(with the little hand icon)

'mackie emu'... updated in realtime...

Oh ok, well that sounds ok then if groups are updated. Maybe that was word I was looking for. I don't how the bcr is setup in terms of different banks/groups, so I used the word "preset". But I wouldn't necessarily have to use an entirely different preset at all, just a way of switching bewteen a group of 8 encoders. So the BCR has some sort of grouping function allowing you to assign more cc's to the same encoders? How many "groups are there per treset?

thanks man!

So just to be sure:

I want each row of encoders to be sends for tracks 1-8. Then I can hit a group button of some kind and have them be my 3 sends for 9-16?

the top row of 8 push-encoders.. can have 4 'layers'/group...
that's 32 pots+32 buttons...

looks interesting, but seems like a bunch of stuff to get into just to map my sends.

That's too bad that only the top 8 are switchable between 4 groups. That doesn't work for me, because I want to be able to control any 3 sends at once from any track. I don't mind switching between groups of 8 tracks, but I don't want to switch between sends for any given track.

exactly. those are the ones I'd want to use, rather than the top 8. The reason being that I want instant control of any of 3 sends within the group of 8 tracks. i just wish I could switch those 3x8 rows of encoders instantly to control the next 8 tracks (9-16) and have the LEDs update. Sounds like that doesn't happen though. shucks.

I don't know what he's rambling on about hitting control M?

You can have sends 1-8 on 1 preset on the BCR, select the next preset where you got 9-16 (a good way to do it is put a new MIDI channel in every new preset, keep the controller numbers the same)

The encoder rings will update as soon as you switch on the BCR.
