Session view: launching one clip and one only

Post by softserv » Wed Jun 11, 2008 6:00 pm

Prosaic question: How do I launch only one clip in a scene without launching the entire scene?

I'm trying to set up my session view for djing. Live is going to be a second "turntable," and I want to throw some beat loops, effects, and whole songs into session view. I've got my beats stacked up in one track, my songs stacked up in another track, and some midi instruments in a third track.

When I try to launch Song in track 2/scene 1, though, all of scene 1 launches. Is there anything I can do to fix this other than stopping the arrangement clock and re-setting the whole thing each time I want to launch a single clip in a scene?

Thanks for any input,
softserv

You can right-click on a clip, and then choose the "delete play button" or something like that.

kind of an odd question

if you only want to launch one slot, then launch one slot

do not use the scene launch

?

That's the problem - I try to launch one clip and the whole scene launches. I press the play button for only one clip, yet every clip in the scene launches. Odd problem = odd question.

go into midi mapping mode.

look at the bottom of each track, beneath the clips - there is a magic hidden play button there, one for each track. Map something to each of them.
Also you may as well map something to the scene selection controls which have also appeared.

now you should be able to scroll up and down the scenes and trigger whatever clip you like, just one clip. Not the scene

if clicking on the play button for a single clip slot ends up launching an entire scene, then something really fishy is going on

only reason i can see for that to happen is if all the other clips in the scene already have their play buttons activated ie highlighted such that they are the colour you would expect to see after launching the clip then pressing space bar.

Make sure you hit stop all clips in the master track first, perhaps the arrangement view is playing as well? Doing so will un-ready all clips so that when you click on one clip's play triangle it will only play that one.

Great question and thanks for the answer Mysteron! I'm new to Ableton and am working my way through various tutorials. I really hit sandbank with this issue. Wasted two mugs of coffee over it!
