response curves for midi pots/faders

Post by ootheca » Tue Jun 24, 2008 5:57 am

this is something im oft felt wanting for while nocking together little set ups mainly for the purpose of jamming.

expanding on the min and max values that are already available in the midi mapping menu, it would be wonderful if you could edit the way that controller/macro information is received by designated parameters other than just a/b, min/max. you know, stick something in between to spice things up a bit and be able to edit the curve in which the parameter on the instrument/effect responds to the data sent from your controller.

heres an example of a normal then fast incline, with the break point at 60 and 94 (94=128 on the target perameter) (at least i think so!, my maths is terrible!)

as your hardware controller/macro hits 60 in its (currently?) 1-128 range the ratio of the data that the software target is receiving increases to 2/1 (obviously we wont have to worry about ratios as the wonderful ableton boys/girls will make it all graphical) ie as the hardware is kicking out 61 the software is receiving 62 and so on, eg 62/64.63/66.64/68.65/70.66/72... and so on until obviously in this example the software reaches its limit at 128 (94 on the HW) and bottoms out, the hardware has no effect from then on until you were to bring it down below 94 again into its "active curve". you could of course add another break point returning the target value back to zero from 94 to 128 if desired...

it could easily be implemented by a simple break point system housed in a square with a diagonal line from bottom left to top right not visually unlike the current display on the compressor, with the value along the bottom line being that of the controller and the left the value sent to the software parameter. this would allow for positive and negative manipulation of the target parameter value. im sure it could be squeezed into the midi/macro mapping menu where the min max values currently are, probably in an expandable/collapsible tab so as not to clutter the list.

obviously this would open up all sorts of possibilities especially when used with macros, allowing you to have extremely complex warps, like a slow incline of distortion/excitement followed by a abrupt increase in reverb wetness and modulation intensity ending in a cut of all mentioned in the last two values so as not having to pull the fader back through the morph and risk sounding clumsy.

or a successive fade up and down of a series of chains in a rack in one smooth left to right fader movement.

eg in 4 chain rack each with a different set of filters mods and effects incurring very different flavors on the audio.

between 1 and 10 on the hard ware the level of the first chain would reach its full desired volume and stay there until 40 is reached at which point its level is then reduced to silence up to 50, as this decrease is happening the beginning of the curve on chain twos volume has been reached and its level increases from 40 to 50 eventually reaching a plateau until lets say 70 where it fades down until 80 and the cycle continues.

!! think of it as an infinite stack of manual envelopes on an infinite amount of instrument/effect parameters that you can cycle forwards and backwards through at whatever speed you choose in realtime, all on one nob. !!

now imagine 10 of those, imagine how interesting your sets would become, i know how interesting mine would be....

im not sure how well iv explained that, its late and iv had my head in ableton for the last 17 hours 8O but yea i hope iv got my point across and i hope more that there's not already a sneaky way of doing this, or there certainly will be egg on my face.
