Ripping Vinyl with Ableton
Ripping Vinyl with Ableton
Hey all, I know this has been asked before but I am having trouble finding a reference with the search function.
What method do you use when ripping tunes from vinyl using Ableton. Is it ok to record the tracks right into the session view and take the .wav file right out of the audio folder or do you run the track in then rerecord it and render to disk?
What type of compression, if any are you using? Is a compressor really necessary? If so what are the settings you reccomend? I am clueless about compression.
I am using technics 1200's with Stanton T2-RS needles and a Pioneer DJM 500 mixer running into an Maudio quattro.
The tracks will be converted to mp3 for use with Traktor.
I also have Peak, would this be better strictly for ripping vinyl than Ableton?

Re: Ripping Vinyl with Ableton
yes. you'll probably also get better results by not going through the dj mixer. you can get a decent Rolls dedicated phono pre for not very much $smutek wrote:I also have Peak, would this be better strictly for ripping vinyl than Ableton?
i agree. if you have to use a dj mixer for a preamp - by all means do NOT use a Pioneer. If you can't afford a rolls preamp, at the very least see if you can borrow from a friend any Rane mixer to use as your preamp.
Nothing but consumer grade electronics inside the Pioneer, comparable to what you'd find in a $40 sanyo boombox . Where as Rane's are built to specifications comparable to what the military uses, double epoxy PCB's, noise free faders, etc.

1 Buy/steal/borrow pretty much any hi-fi amp, use that not your dj mixer
2 Record hot as poss. but DO NOT clip the signal
3 Don't use any compression, processing etc unless you REALLY know what your doing and intend to remaster the track. Remember it's compressed/mastered already.
4 If you're going to mp3, use the best encoder you can (L.A.M.E.?) at the highest rate you can 'afford' space-wise

i think you can probably afford this:smutek wrote:New gear is out of the question at the moment, thanks for the tips though.
How would you suggest I proceed with what I have?
edit:
ah, I just noticed the suggestion to go through Peak.
Thanks

Thanks Drush. At the moment no I can not, and my wife will kill me if I ask for another piece of audio gear! I have bookmarked the page though for future reference.
How noticable of a difference will it make using the pioneer?
If the electronics are so bad inside then why on earth was it so expensive!!
Just wondering, I really like my little mixer! My wife bought it for me for Christmas about two years ago and I have never had any problems with it.

im checking this out, apparently people are getting great results with the rolls?
im going to be ripping a lot of vinyl in the near future and the results have to be as hi-quality as possible.
are there any other options other than the rolls - i need do this as professionally as possible and want to know as many options as i can before i commit to anything
thanks guys

Smutek- just experiment a bit and decide what sounds best to your ears. I've sold tons of those Rolls preamps. I've never once had a customer come back to tell me how great it sounds. I think of Rolls as a good 'solution-box' company, not a maker of fine audio electronics.smutek wrote: How noticable of a difference will it make using the pioneer?

Okay...
I'm going a bit OT here... I just picked up a pair of 1200's used. Bought them from a guy from Craigslist. Turns out of course that the guy selling them had decided to go all Ableton based for his DJ sets! I picked them up because my old turntable died six months ago and it took me that long to decide to go ahead and get a pair of DJ decks. I have a huge record collection and I want to explore DJing at home with vinyl + Ableton for fun.
But now I have to pick out a mixer. It's not easy to do. People are very opinionated about DJ mixers. I used to work at Guitar Center (

Like the new Allen & Heath 3D. Pure drool fodder for us Live geeks. That baby has a digital out so you can just capture vinyl straight into your computer.
What 4 channel DJ mixer do you guys think should land on my desk? I want to be able to do the club mix type stuff, but I also want to cut and scratch for fun. Suggestions?

I found it best to record into a dedicated audio editor - like Peak or Pro-Tools or whatever - easy
remember, what you hear is what you get so if you feel you should compress it on the way in - go for it
I agree - use a RANE mixer even though you aint got one
I have a Mojo from days gone by and it still kicks - in my bedroom (oh wait, my STUDIO) in a club or at a RAVE
RANE is by far the leader in dj mixers in Washington state - actually they're made in Washignton up the street in Woodinville - it was nice, mine just went kaput after a rave and I just drove up the street and they fixed it
my buddy works there now and he sends me knobs and faders and shit
I'm just blabbing - all kinds of shit is made in Washington like Airplanes, computers, paper, coffee, snowboards, meth and audio / dj mixers
It's funny washington as a whole seems pretty liberal but believe you me it's very conservative

How about getting 3 Live tracks from the 2 decks + mixer?
I think this is the best place to ping this post, based on the existing discussion here:
I bring my mixer [numark ppd01] into a motu 828 into a G5 with Live. Currently, this allows me one track in Live - the mix from the balanced outs on my mixer.
I am aiming for a situation where I get 3 tracks:
1. deck a
2. deck b
3. the mixer
The only thing I can think of is to split the rca's out of the decks so that one set goes into the mixer and the other sert through pre amps, into the motu - and that is a hack.
Any suggestions?
