so does that mean i should set up both port 1 and 2 if i want to send both midi messages and keyboards?

when i had it working before (2 months ago) i had it set to port 1 and everything worked fine.

did you try it?

I believe it does but I'm not there in your studio to look at it, who knows what damage you could've done by tweaking settings you didn't know about.

most of all, don't mess with it after this, or at least pay attention to what you tweak and learn along the way.

im at home now on the laptop. i got automap working... kinda... but its really lame and is not helping me with what i want to do at all.

i've read all these posts and the manuals and i still don't get it.

all i want to do is be able to assign knobs on the fly to different plugins and control multiple plugins at the same time (say a delay regen and a filter freq cutoff on 2 diff. plugs). everytime i assign a control and then unclick the MIDI button in ableton, the SL goes right back to the automap, even if i was on a different template. that is not cool.

also, it seems with automap if i assign something to a CC it doesn't tell me what i've assigned it to. i have no problem making templates using the sl editor and that's what i'd prefer to do, but if this switching back and fro to the damn automap template keeps happening, i'm going to throw this crap out the window.

 hang in there...

automap can be a strange beast.

the whole 'text on the LCD' thing only works with automap, not manually assigned stuff.

the top row of encoders are for automap, you can use the knobs below that to midi assign stuff, but first you have to go into the SL and turn them into CC#s, assign the midi channel, the port out and stuff.

if you've saved off the automap template after tweaking it, reload it into the SL. just to be safe.

what you should be able to do is use the automap template, click a VST, it's now automap assigned to that VST. btw one of the 'extra' buttons at the top left of the SL LOCKS the SL to that VST, I don't recall which (I'm at work.)

once the other two rows of knobs on the SL are enabled by you and the automap template is saved off with them enabled, you should be able to use those as regular midi assignments.

mind you, this is coming from a guy with the original SL OS installed who hasn't tweaked/upset/reprogrammed his SL for months.

good luck!! I was an early adopter with these, once I got it going it just works, others have problems.

RJ Dubya is the SL studmuffin around here.

thanks so much tonedeft. i'm slowly getting my head around it. i got the SL like 2 years ago but only use it with FLStudio as a generic midi controller. we've just started messing with ableton to get our live sets together.

another thing. im reading hte manual, and stuff is starting to make sense, but i can't seem to get impulse working. the remotesl says impulse responds to C3-C4 on the white keys. i set up the drumpads to those per it's instreuctions but its still not triggering.

but yeah.. after all your help and reading the manual 10 times, i think im getting it and this is awesome :)

thanks everyone!

also, does anyone know how to set it up so that when you load a plugin, it's not on until you turn it on? i'd hate to have to drop in a filter immediately on time and fuck it up so it sounds all whack. i'd rather drop in a plug-in off so that i can set my settings before i turn it on

thanks!

well, you can save presets of your own, just hit the little disc icon on the plug in. I've never made an preset that was OFF, try it.

drum pads - is Live's midi in activity indicator blinking when you hit a pad?

if they're sending midi and it's the right notes then it's the port setting on the SL or the midi setting in Live. can you play drums on the keys? if so then it's the SL's settings.

There is pic in manual ( the newest one)
input port 1 track and remote same on port 2
output track sync port 1
then Sl selected as Remote and port 2 as in and out

I have only port one selected and in the remote selected SL and ports 2 and everything works as I want, including SL working as interface for my faderfox.
What i have no clue is that i see Automap midi in my Live preferences and there is nothing mentioned about it from Novation. On their pics the is no such a thing.
Whatever, as long as it all works, and it does I dont bother much.
I must say 2 years ago SL was nightmare , today it turned into dreamcontroller.
