New computer running Intel Quad 2,66 12 mb FSB with Live 7

I`ve just built a new computer running Intel Quad 2,66 (12 mb FSB) on ASUS P5E3 Deluxe, 2Gb DDR3, with RME Fireface 800 soundcard. Problem is that the CPU sometimes running crazy. Is Live 7 really compatible with quad processors? The abes say so, but................

yes, it is very much compatible with quad processors.

Explain what your set looks like when you get said crazy CPU spikes.

Do you put 14 plugins on 1 track?

Each track is sent to a separate core, so if you have 1 track with lots of stuff on it, you can make 8 copies of it if you have 8 cores, and you won't see any increase in CPU. Add a ninth track, and then it starts bumping up.

No, I just opened up an old song produced on a P4 3.2.

When playing some seconds, the CPU (in Live) shows something like 4365 % overload. The whole thing freezes and Live shuts down. The song only have about 7 tracks, + Drum Rack

I assume you've enabled multiprocessor support in the preferences?

what is your OS? what does your task manager state under the porcesses tab? do you use process explorer maybe?

Win XP Pro sp3

The task manager shows very little CPU usge one all 4 cores. It has to be something with Live multi-core support.

I'm sorry, but that made me laugh.
I does not have to be to do with Live's multi-core support at all.

have you done any proper system diagnostics to see if there is anything munching resources like a hungry hippo.

get a few tools from Sysinternals and watch those processes, see what is doing the damage.

I have a Q6600, 2gb of ram, no issues at all in Live 7.07. The CPU spikes could be caused by any of the following:

1. Bus issues
2. Hard drive drivers
3. Chipset issues
4. Network issues
5. Firewire drivers for the RME

I'm sure you've optimized for audio, but if not, check out MusicXP.net and http://tarekith.com/assets/XPTweaks.htm

Also, make sure you have the latest BIOS, chipset drivers. Make sure you have the latest video drivers, and make sure your drives are all set up with the correct Sata drivers.

I have almost an identical setup as yours...the only real difference is that I run the RME Multiface, so I think you have something not working at the driver level. That would be my guess. Live 7.07 is pretty stable for me.
