Live looping cello video

Post by taximouse » Thu Jul 03, 2008 10:48 pm

For you Live Loopers out there, this is a performance I did last October involving Cello + AbletonLive + 2 Electrix Repeaters

I apologize in advance for the Lexass advertisement at the beginning, I don't support them personally (only an ancient VW over here) ...the ad only lasts a few seconds. And, it was the first time I'd ever performed the piece, so I look kind of nervous!

Also, I realized the other day that I don't use my other software any more. I ONLY use Live...for everything... stage and studio!

Thank you Abletons!

Hi Zoë, I remember your work from Loopers Delight!

Very emotive piece - how much of it is improvised, if any?

I enjoyed that, it helps that cello can naturally be so expressive and produce a wide enough range of timbres that you don't have to rely on effects to achieve sonic variation in your loops.
It also helps to be able to play cello like that, of course ;)

I wish that the various foot-pedal manufacturers would ease up on those audible switches though. I saw a friend of mine do a violin/piano looper set over the weekend and the footswitches from her electroharmonix made that same 'CLICK' that the Electrix does. It seems so loud to me.
I guess we all need to be performing in front of 20 marshal stacks in huge stadia to drown out the noise of them.

Sorry, drifted off track there. You were good.

thank ye!

there are improvised segments always, and depending on how things go onstage, i rearrange sections of a song...leave some parts out, extend others.

each segments is made up of triggered automated midi commands that record phrases onto the Repeaters or into Ableton Live. and then some parts i just do it all with my feet, and there is no automation.

the trick now is that i'm trying to phase out the Repeaters, since who knows how much longer they will hold up! ack!

Nice one Zoe,

Great to see others live sampling acoustic instruments. Still don't see much of it.

If if the footpedal clicks bother you, it's possible to use something like a midi controller keyboard ( I use an Axiom 25) as the foot pedal controller, which doesn't make clicks when you press it, though it does mean performing barefoot & working with toes rather than whole feet.

Good luck with it all.
