Spectrasonics Trilogy and Atmosphere midi in ableton?

Anyone know how to automate say cutoff or filter res with midi in these vsts? I've been looking around the net and their support forums and can't find any useful info. The only way I've been successful doing it is when the record function is enabled on the channel but I don't want to record the automation yet... anyone got any tips?

you have to automate things with cc's. Without looking in my manual i think 97 controls the filter cutoff

ok.. but how do I automate cc's then in ableton? Sorry if this is a retarded question...
