osx: white noise generator plugin wanted

hey,

it seems that live itself can't generate real white noise (or any kind of noise). is there a (free) vst-plugin out there, that can do the job of generating noise in realtime?

Hi!

Operator has a Noise oscillator. I don't know if it's white noise, it's just called Noise.

I tried generating a 10 sec white noise sample (not with a plugin though), and I couldn't hear it looping, so depending on what you need it for, wouldn't a sample be enough?

Operator has definitly NO white noise. You can adjust the frequency, white noise contains all frequencies... must be something like a bandpass after a noise generator.

I once did a long white noise sample in a sound editor.... very long time ago and I still use it. Try the freeware sample editors, they should have a "create noise" option.

Oh and of course you cannot hear looping of a noise sample. It should be longer than a few ms though.

thanks for your replies, but i'm really looking for a free vst that will do the job. if i would use the noise only for snares and hihats and percussive things like that, i would be fine with a sample.

but i want to use it also for long envolving sweeps and don't want to use a 60seconds sample just to be sure, that it won't loop...

You could use two samples and cross fade between them. If it is white noise you shouldn't hear the loop points then.

I´m sure there are many, many freeware VST's that have white noise oscillators.

I´d go ask around on the KVR Audio forums, those guys probably know exactly which synth will serve you right...

Audacity can generate white pink and brown noise. It's free also

hate to be *that* guy, but there is no such thing as "noise oscillator". Just being a semantic jerk, please forgive me. There is instead a "noise generator". I also take issue with Thor from Reason mislabeing noise in this mannerl.

Live's Analog synth produces white-ish noise - equal power in all freqs. Have you listened to that?

I heard from an acoustician that "white noise" exists only in theory...

Infinity exists only in Theory, but we still have Limiters, do we not?! We can get pretty damned close.

There is some truth in it.
As you can't generate a sampling rate close to infinity, you can't generate theoretically exact white noise. However the question remains if that is neccessary, because you won't notice the difference.

A sampling rate close to infinity is kinda like analog, ain't it? In quantum physics there is some ridicoulsly tiny number of what is actually the "sampling rate" of the universe... but whatever.

The white noise existing only in theory part doesn't literally involve ALL frequecies in the enitre universe, but is still defined sonically; the freqs we can perceive. AND there are infinite frequencies within that one band! Which is blowing my mind right now.
I think however, and it's been a long time since I was all academic about noise gens, but, the problem with producing white noise has something to do with the mechanics of speaker cones and/or whatever sound reproduction issues there may be in turning a white noise signal into white noise audio...
Ummm. It's kinda the same scenario for the polar opposite: a sine wave.
