The most obvious application would be a common reverb send for multiple channels. It's easier to manage one rather than several reverbs, it's easier on cpu, and it makes sense soundwise to create one space.
EQ is more of an obvious insert-job.
Compression can be both, mostly insert but sends are uses for parallell compression.
