with Live 4 you can create a clip then drag it to the impulse as a hit - what's better about dr Rex?

Could you elaborate a little further on this? Sorry, picking up a hell of a lot in little time, it makes sense but I need to go over it a bit more...

How would I isolate and transfer a hit from a loop to the impulse in Live?

best alternatives would be:

First : Bitshift Phatmatik Pro

or Native Instruments: Intakt

http://www.native-instruments.net/index.php?intakt_us

I have requested a feauture in Live to implement the hitpoints to be turned into "slices" so one could trigger them like rex files or re play the loops like Dr. Rex.

Intakt is very fun!

I got it as part of NI Komplete 2, so I didn't feel obliged to try it right away.. especially since I thought it would be redundant in light of Live's functionality, but I have decided that it works very well in Live and allows me to do things to loops that I could not otherwise do.

I'm not sure it's worth the price, but if you have access to it you should definitely check it out (I find it way more flexible with the rex files than Dr. Rex is).

if you set the start and end ponts so you only have the beat you want selected you can thern drag it to the impulse or simpler and use it as individual drum hits - check this out before you fork out on a new app, you might find it more than does what you want

If you have Reason use it .
Rack up your rex devices.
Rewire each on to rewire direct.
Assign each in pairs 1 midi track 1 audio monitor track.
Program the midi data on the midi tracks and use VST effects on the audio input tracks.
It works damn well I might add and is ridiculously CPU lite.
I say here rewire direct (as in no Reason mixer) simply because the Ableton Compressor II does a damn fine job of beefing up the Dr.REX player better than anything in Reason does.
You can control pan , volume and all the paramters of Dr.Rex from within the midi clip itself anyway and from Lives session view.
Have fun .

I agree with Fax..Easily Rewire up Reason..
