Midi Feedback

Post by brother-james » Tue Jul 22, 2008 5:23 pm

Hi mates! I've some fucking problem with my c setup and ableton live, hope someone could help me.

So this is:

I'm on PB 1.25 w/tiger 10.3.9
Live 7.0.7

I use a motu microexpress usb to connect my hardware stuff, and I notice that when I setup more than one output to "sync" ( in the midi preferences) the clock is doubled and all the drum machine run too fast. It's a shit because I can't control the midi latency of every single machine. Another big problem is that when I connect my microkorg and I use a patch with a lot of delay it's out of sync even if the audio latency is really short ( I mean 3ms).

Someone has the same problem?

Tnx

run a little app like MidiMonitor and watch the logs. something is passing the clock back in and you are getting feedback. look first at anything that is connected both in and out. and make sure the i/o prefs in live are not allowing it to happen. shut of the sync in's wherever they are not needed, unless you find a cabling issue first.

I've only the microkorg connected in both direction but if I disconnect the input nothing change.

The clock is doubled when I click "sync on" on two ports!

can you daisy chain the gear and sync it all off of the same port?

why do you have two ports with sync on, if you only have one device connected? sorry, just trying to get clarification.

if live is acting as the clock, make sure NOTHING has sync on for an input port (at least for testing).

you said you get the same results when disconnecting the input, but make sure that on the korg itself, it does not have soft-thru turned on (if it has such a feature [note: soft-thru allows passing the clock to the midi out port in addition to midi thru, which is a very common source of midi feedback. some hardware has this some not, and it's usually a deep hidden function easily overlooked])

otherwise, disconnect everything and try adding things one at a time, as well as turning on ports one at a time. at some point, you will hopefully reach a 'slaps forehead' moment.

good luck!

ok..

I'll try to be more clear.

I've a lot of machine connected in my setup, every machine has it's own midi port.
The microkorg is the only one connected in both direction, the other machine are connected in one way.

The problem are two.

- The first one is that the clock is doubled when I hit the sync on on two or more midi ports.

- The second one is that midi is usually out of sync (or maybe not stable) even if I connect only one machine like microkorg.
If I use a patch with a lot of delay, I can hear it out of sync more easily.

Tnx for your support guys!

Why? I've a motu interface to split each midi channel. Maybe I can solve that problem, but it's not what I want :)

^^ i only mention this because I have never had an issue with boxes drifting after chaining 7-8 clocks together.

it should be the same number of cables.

you can send all those midi channels on the same cable.
