Controlling Live with Midi?

Post by pez » Sun Oct 17, 2004 5:57 am

I need the ability to hold my guitar in my two hands and control Live with my feet via a midi foot pedal. Surely this must be possbile? I have been trying but I can't get to working. I sure hope that I am doing something wrong because this is really going to piss me off if I can't do this!

I have a Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller. I want to use it to navigate around the Live interface (as I can with the arrow keys on my computer). I also want the ability to use the foot controller to toggle on/off the record mode for the currently selected track and take.

Currently all I am able to do is assign a single midi note to a single position (on a single track)! I can not figure out any way to use a midi controller to navigate left, right, up and down. Is this possible?

I am on a Mac OSX running Live 4.

Thanks.

check out my free app controlAid. It is designed to let you do exactly what you want.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your reply.

I have downloaded and installed your application but I am having trouble getting my head around it. Have you ever considered using something like one of these screen capture apps to make a demo video?

Can I use your software in Live without using a mouse?

How does your sofware allow me to navigate around the Live interface via midi commands?

How do I load your Live preset?

Hey Pez,

I have snapz, but don't have time to make a demo video right now. It's also difficult since everybody has different needs for the program, and the midi setups can be very different and very complicated for everybody. Some people use it just for the mouse to midi capabilities...

You don't need a mouse to use controlAid, except to initially set it up. You definitely don't need it during a performance.

By mapping one pedal to scene select, and then mapping the other pedal to the channel select feature of controlAid (set the pedal to send whatever cc message you select for channelCC in the "other" tab of controlAid), you can select any clip from up to 16 different tracks in controlAid. You can also have one button that triggers whatever clip is currently selected. Another button can record enable whatever channel is selected.

So using the two pedals and two buttons on your FCB, you can record enable, record to, and trigger any clip for playback on up to 16 channels.

You should be able to just open the preset I included like any other Live file... let me know if there is a problem with that. I think once you get that open, the uses of controlAid will become much clearer. - Charlie
