hardware preamps, channelstrips anyone?

wondering if anyone here uses hardware channelstrips or preamps. was considering the avalon 737 vt but its a bit pricey. a friend has one, and i swear anything that goes through it sounds like gold. anyone know of anything else around this price range that is considered of very good quality. Please no soft vs hardware wars. I know its tempting but...

neve, chandler, api, ssl, amek, gml....

any of those will do the trick, i like avalons but for the same money i will buy a gml or a neve

hehe...I heard you can print cash with those as well...

just be aware that EVERYTHING... (in your signal path)
needs to be up to par...
that means the AD/DA better be good...
the eq...
the comp...
the mixer(if any)...
the cables...

there should be no element in the chain that could possibly degrade the signal after the Pre...

I just recommended some friends of mine to buy a Rupert Neve Portico -only after some searching and reading....never heard it though. Don't think you can go much wrong in that range...more a matter of taste, me thinks...

Hi, I use the BG no:1 € 765,- 2 channels + 3 low cut freq. Handmade by Mike who used to be sound-engineer at the DECCA record company. They where building there own stuff at that time (40 years ago). And he is still doing it! A warm and fat sound.

The Bg1 is lovely.
I use a Telefunken v376 and v672 to track guitars and vocals. Tried to pass some Crystal patch into the 376 and even if the signal does D/A and then A/D from/to the fireface, it shines.

I had two avalons in my studio for awhile, until I had to sell the since i got in a crunch for cash.....anyho, they sounded ultra-foxy indeed. Always made a majority of my softsynths sound pretty buneo. Hell, I used to even run entire mixes thru those badboys, just for the warmth. Altho, the signal chain comment is true when it comes to the avalons or any other high-end channelstrips.

i have a millenia STT-1, it's awesome, in part because of versatility (you can make any portion of chain -- eq/comp/etc -- either tube or SS, and it's got a transistor you can kick in for neve-style. phenomenal sound, though it's pricey enough it should be.
