Just go 'Shit!' and tell the crowd to all put their phones on speaker, and play some tunes while you fix it! Or, get their headphones out and have a silent disco!

We run Live on 2 computers, each doing half the tracks. Each computer has a stereo ruffmix backup of what the other is doing for every scene - this track always plays, but is usually muted. If one computer should freeze or crash, we can un-mute this track and fly on one engine while re-booting the other. The crowd never knows a thing. We've had to use this only 3 times in the last 4 years. In the event of a catastrophic hull-loss failure we also have an iPod.

incorporating a live drummer, singer, and using a Wretch machine for live improvisation. The laptop crashes, it's all live improv.

I know that doesn't help you guys who DJ, or who use a laptop as your only instrument, but my question to that is what are we doing to the performance aspect of music? Why not just hand a mix tape over of your best mix? No one in the audience is going to be able to tell that you're not just checking email and playing iTunes. :?

Say "Talk amongst yourselves" while I get the thing up and running again.

I've had live crash on me during a set, but my sets are really low key and I just said "hang on a minute while I reboot" and then I drank some beer while I waited.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

+1 on the failsafe.

I just saw a friend's gig where the bulk of the entire set was played off an ipod and they just played some instruments and sung over that. Although I found it kind of funny that their sound guy by the mixer was in charge of cuing the songs on the ipod, the human untitled playlist.

But I will admit the banjo thing sounds good and I would go to that gig hoping Live crashes.

it happened to me earlier this year in Tokyo , at a Techno gig in Shibuya !

i said - "minna san , gomenasai !!" (bowed deeply) and rebooted.

i got off pretty lightly...

we had a black out at a gig once, light show, computer, guitar amps everything went. Got the crowd singing "cant take my eyes of you" and some other football type songs. It was hilarious, took about 3 songs before the power was back. Dont think too many people left. :?
