Music sure sounds better...

Post by Plastic Hassle » Sun Aug 03, 2008 7:40 pm

Usually I work at relatively low volume, ears, neighbours etc but the other day I just wanted some loud music and cranked up iTunes on random through a pair of Yamaha MSP3s. I got a real surprise when something I'd made a couple of years ago and forgotten about came up and pretty much blew me away. So if you're feeling a bit "blah" about what you do. TURN IT UP!!!

Isn't this the psychoacoustic effect (I think) where music sounds deceptively better at louder volumes. I'm sure I read about this years ago?

it could be that the over produced stuff didn't sound very good at high volume where as his tune that may have had a bit more dynamic range actually sounded really good at high volume. I've heard before that more dynamic range actually has a tendency to be more pleasing to a listener at a high volume than something thats smashed all to hell.

or it could be psycho acoustic placebo.

either way, if it sounds good listen to it :)

this is very true I remember when I only had cans for a while and used them at low levels than heard my music as it pumped out of a PA system at a club and was quite taken aback. Sometimes you got just crank it to rank it.

+1

I thought that's where this thread was going to.

But that's cool that your track sounded great at low volume, it sure beats the hell out of making a track that you thought sounds great and then you play it on a club PA and it sounds like total ass.
