Add silence to end of clip

Post by psilosly » Sat Oct 16, 2004 8:20 pm

Maybe I just can't figure out how to do this, but I'd like to be able to add some silence to the end of some clips I'm working with.

Sometimes I have a clip that is 4 beats long, but on the last beat, the record got cut a little short. This makes it sound out of sync with the 2, 3 and 4th beats playing progressively farther from when they should be.
This would be easy to fix if we could more the 5th beat warp-marker just a little to the right, but you can't move it past the end of the clip...adding some silence at the end of the clip would make this really easy.

The work around I have now is to use the 4th-beat warp-marker (or the last one you can get a handle on and move right), but this time compresses the last beat (or whatever is to the right of the marker you use) and isn't ideal.

Just use a sample editor like Soundforge, Goldwave or Peak etc, you'll find an option to add as much silence as you need, then reload the clip into Live.

If you want to stay inside Live, what I sometimes do is to stretch out a loop and set with automation let's say the last four bars to zero. When rendering out the song will have those additional bars included. This assumes nothing leaks out through the buses. --Kent

yeah, external editing is another work-around and I'm sure there are others internal to Live.

It'd just be nice to be able to drag the furthest-right warp marker past the end of the clip and have Live automatically add the needed silence to the end of the clip.

you can totally add silence to the end of a clip it is in the manual

check it out

use the clip envelope...select volume...unlink the clip.....enter the length of the clip you want then silence the amount you want silenced...

...presto silence at the end of the clip

I've also used some of the workarounds that people have mentioned, but like psilosly, I'd really like a better way. In my particular case, sometimes you have a loop that's playing every bar, but then you want to change it to play every two bars, on-the-fly. Right now, my only solution is to create a 2-bar clip envelope and silence the second bar: it works, but it's too slow to do live. It would be *enormously* useful to me if you could just specify a length greater than the actual clip length, and then live would just insert silence.

To add silence to end (or beginning) of clip I place the clip in Arrangement View I drag mouse over the clip and whatever amt. of time before or after clip I want silenced, I then Consolidate clip (Edit -> consolidate) or hit Ctrl+J and the clip is saved with added time.

I figured this one out when shaving the other morning...go figure.
