quad pan in live 7?

I used to work in hex, but switched to quad when I moved to a smaller studio, & got 4 matched speakers, instead of 6 mis-matched funky ones!

Originally, we wanted an octophonic stage but getting matched speakers has been an issue. We've got 6 active mackie 1530s for the dome. Our limit on noise is 3k and that plus the 2 subs comes out at a cool 15k! real shame we cant crank it.

As for documenting it, not sure how best to proceed. We'll certainly be recording out the desk in some fashion or other. We've recruited a mate to film the whole process of setting up, performing etc so we can make a showreel.

Sounds like you have it covered. Are you mainly using computer based sound sources, or is there hardware involved too?

Its a mashup of samples and synthesised audio. Mines all running off the mbp, although one geezer is bringing a few synths I think. We have a number of other folks coming to do stuff from crazy spatial ambient through to funky abstract breaks and minimal techno. We have some awesome VJays coming too.

I've come across some of those names before, I'm blown away by what some people are doing now in terms of av shows. We're a bit new to this but I hope we can expand and refine on this experience and take the dome to other festivals and around Europe etc. Thats the plan anyway.

i am new to quadrophonic setups.

My goal is to prepare a piece for four speakers
with moving / rotating mono and stereo material.

I figured out how to set up 4 return channels
fed by the audio tracks. In the arrangement
view i can draw send envelopes and simulate
movements, though on a rather clumsy and low level.

It would be nice to have movement "templates",
i.e. 360 degrees in 2 seconds, front to rear in
1 second and so on. Can this be done with the
dummy clips you mentioned ?

Can someone post a live set with those
dummy clips ? i still don't get the clue
of this concept.
how do you assign them to the actual
audio tracks that stream the music ?

You route the audio to the track that has the dummy clip on it, and the dummy clip plays at the same time as the audio clip.
The dummy clips's settings (such as panning envelopes) control the mixer behaviour for that track.

You say you drew envelopes in arrangement view - with dummy clips you simply do the same thing in clip view.

If you are doing just one long piece - like an installation - you can probably keep using the arrangement view, but you will most likely discover that session view is more flexible once you start investigating it further.

Yep, you can make template dummy clips that can be used in whatever combination you want.

True surround panning is not available in Live as yet.

i suppose the dummy clip is a (silent) audio clip,
since you cannot route audio to a midi track ???
Maybe i'm dumb, i still don't get it. would you
mind pasting a screenshot of a simple quadpanning
mixer setup ?

Yes, the piece is a kind of installation, a theatre
piece in fact, length about one hour. I need rotating
sounds for about ten minutes somewhere in the middle
of the piece.

And yes, surround panning should find its way to the feature wishlist.

well I don't have a template for that, sorry - but I use 4 return tracks as my outputs to the four audio busses for quad in LIve - it is a PITA, and in some theatre shows I used to rewire to Cubase SX just to have surround panning..........but even then it was the same principle: a pre recorded "dummy" track in Cubase looping with an envelope creating a surround pan. Actually I sometimes get away with using 2 stereo return tracks and either dummy clips or the autopan effect, depending on the situation.

AS far as midi clips are concerned: one method is to have a dummy clip on the track containing the midi instrument, (which is set to monitor IN), the midi clip has no notes but does have envelopes of your choice drawn in, so you can auto pan etc while playing.

If you are using pre recorded midi material, then simply add the envelopes to that clip and play it with monitor set to off. Just go to clip view, select MIXER and then select the parameter you want to control and then experiment with drawing envelopes.

number and distance of (identical?) speakers and so on...

There are many approaches, pretty well documented in a
workshop with examples for PD. If anybody is interested,
