Post by subbasshead » Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:18 am

first of a few posts but this is top of my list:

- 5.1 (or quad or 7.1) panners on each mono or stereo track...
- 5.1 (or quad or 7.1) mix bus
- 5.1 (or quad or 7.1) bounce destination

Making music in surround would be equivalent to my step up from eJay to FL Studio.

yeah that kinda works as a workaround, although i just use 2 aux outs for the surrounds
as theres nothing wrong with the LR for front...
but what we need is a quad and/or 5.1 panner...
ie the sofware equivalent of one of these:

yeah, you can botch surround with this method, but without proper dedicated panners and multichannel routing options its very basic. You can create a simple panner if your controller has a joystick or an x-y pad. I used this method for a surround project recently and it was pretty limited.

I'm holding out for fully integrated ambisonic encoders/decoders. Will probably be a long wait for sure.

The live potentials of surround sound are perfect with the Ableton interface and workflow. Even basic multichannel support would be a start!

What I need is a hardware/software equivalent of this. A solution that incorporates both the joystick model in the software & a physical joystick per channel.

Ideally the software will be Live with surround support.

As for the hardware controller, I'll probably have to build it myself since this is not a common requirement.

Might as well ask: does anyone know of a "surround mixer" with joysticks on each channel? One more little detail: it has to be small enough to take to gigs. Probably doesn't exist.

It'll set me back a piece at $20,784 for 16 channels! 8O
