is this really news? I mean that in the sense that people were talking about this probably happening for at least 6 months, maybe a year. check the Obama thread, I know I mentioned it there. IIRC it was brought to my attention when Obama and Clinton were picking foreign affair advisors.

The truth is that Russia wants a grip on all oil moving east to west. The pipeline through Georgia is the only one that doesn't go thru Russia or Iran.

The Georgian President is a colossal idiot to do what he did. Worst case, Georgia would've lost a chunk of impoverished semi-wasteland peopled by malcontents, if these people in question decided to separate.

Instead, he's given the Russians an excuse to invade not only South Ossetia, but to roll into Abkhazia as well, which is Black Sea waterfront real estate, also with separtist leanings.

So, like losers before him, he'll be forced to surrender and make concessions. What a dick.

[edit] oh yeh, and while they were at it, the Russians took the opportunity to bomb Georgia's main oil terminal on the Black Sea. They had this lined out well in advance.
