Allen & Heath Xone:4D Photos and Videos

Post by Dougie Jones » Mon Aug 11, 2008 6:47 pm

Hi Ableton peeps,

This is my first post here of what will be many as I become more and more involved with Live. I've used the software a fair bit already to produce my productions/remixes but mainly I've used it in conjunction with two CDJs to DJ with.

To help improve my performance further I've treated (and bankrupted) myself to an Allen & Heath Xone:4D mixer. Its a great piece of kit and I've noticed that there isn't that much info about it online yet so I've uploaded some pics and vids. If you want to check out the still images they are on the galleries page of my website here:

As far as I'm aware these are the first on the net that are not the official press pics.

Oh and if you are interested in the videos you can check them out here:

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

It's gorgeous. Looks like A&H spread out the rotaries a little bit too. USB 2.0. Looks like fun. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting point mate, I've been really happy with it so far but each to their own. What didn't you like about yours and was the 3D or 4D?

i never got the crackles, but i remember hearing about them.
the only issue i have is that the device will not take the latest firmware update.

seems to be a heat issue or something. but a&h is no help. i update the firmware and after a couple hours the absolute controllers no longer respond properly, power off the unit for a few hours and all is well again.. i loaded the old firmware and the 3d works as it should..

I did one show where they had teh 3d and I can't say that I liked it much. The feel of it was "ok" but there is no ajustment for the cross fader. That is a total deal breaker over here. For that much cash I want some more basic features. Mono booth switch would be nice. It felt like it was ment to be in a home setup more than a club to me. I prefer the feel of my D4 Pro. Firewire, SOLID, analog filters, nice lit EQ and STABLE to a fault. Never once craped out or made a click or pop in the six months that I have owned it.

Don't want to dump on your mixer, it is sweet in it's own way.

So does it sync Ableton automatically to whatever it is playing on the cdjs/tts?

kind of, the latest firmware is getting better. it is by no means an easy mix, but it does help.

Thanks for the replies guys, some interesting comments. I must admit I haven't noticed any crackles so far and the USB 2 connection always seems to work fine for me.

The soundcard can cause the audio on the MacBook Pro to play up once it has been disconnected from time to time but that is the only thing I've noticed so far and a quick restart solves the problem. In general it seems to work just as well as the Native Instruments Audio Kontol 1 that I used to use.

And yeah the MIDI clock does take a bit of getting used to but it is a good innovative way of combining Ableton with standard decks/CDJs.
