Multi-Threading / Dual CPU audio processing support
Multi-Threading / Dual CPU audio processing support
thanks abletons for creating a beast with version 4, but now that its blown the door open on how i work, i gotta ask for this feature.
i'm sure its been mentioned but i want to reiterate that i'd like this feature for Windows users as well as Mac G5 users. I'm using Reaktor more and more and more and am actually starting to hit the ceiling on my Athlon 64 3000, even when its overclocked to 3200.
So, as soon as Live supports dual cpu audio engine processing i'm building a dual opteron machine. Theres no use in me building a higher spec single cpu machine when true dual processor support would be the best solution for many of us. and i can't emphasize this enough = the sooner the better!
thanks!

If you've been following the development with the dual-core CPUs to come out next year, the individual core speed will be dropped (but the overall speed of both cores together will be much faster). If Live isn't optomized for dual processors, then Live will run slower on the next generation processors.
I guess we still have just under a year...but it's just a thought.

If the new stuff for Live5 is just going to be plug-ins then it doesn't appear that Live5 will support multiple threads for the Audio Engine.
As it is right now, there are only 2 threads ~ Audio Engine & Graphics.

Little misunderstanding on your part there, the next version to be released is Live 4.05, not Live 5, I think that's a little further down the road - we can still hope!tylast wrote:If the new stuff for Live5 is just going to be plug-ins then it doesn't appear that Live5 will support multiple threads for the Audio Engine. As it is right now, there are only 2 threads ~ Audio Engine & Graphics.
do you actually think they would change the programming ? like it is ment for live use and laptop use more so than a full out DAW, even tho people do use it for production.. im wanting to upgrade my system and i would like to go full out this time.. dual AMD the works, and i use live as my main host , if this is not going to ever happen i would like to know. Ableton is it possible to give some kind of indication ? not just a "well it could be on the to do list" i need a yes no answer ..

OK adam I have to disagree with this, I wouldn't mind dual processor support, but I really want Live's audio engine optimized, on both platforms.AdamJay wrote: i'm sure its been mentioned but i want to reiterate that i'd like this feature for Windows users as well as Mac G5 users. Live performs much worse running soft synths than Logic, 5 compared to 8 on a 800mhz powerbook. Live 4 rewired into Logic can run all of it's time stretching and clip firing functions, and Logic is able to host 8 Absynths while Live is rewired?! This suggests to me that Live's audio engine is a PIG.
I want Live to perform well on a laptop before I worry about the desktop. I understand that you're wanting to use Reactor etc. I also own and love reactor.
The other thing is dual support is great and all, but duals eat up CPU on their own, two 3 Gig CPUs would equal about a 4.5 Gig CPU at full application optimization in my experience. Logic is about as optimized for duals as you can get, and on a dual Gig mac, The machine is performing at around a 1.6 Gig level. I seriously doubt Live would get to that level, but maybe close to SX dual level...
In windows land, The jump in processor speeds is on such a regular basis that any dual machine would be trumped by a single in less than six months.
Once again, I would much rather see them improve the performance of their audio engine than spend that time on dual support.
