'Genocide' is being overused nowadays, this is not genocide, but it is barbaric, and it should be condemned by the US gov't. That said, the barbarism, as usual, is not limited to one side. There are these things that are 'interesting facts':

From what I've read, I am convinced that the US gov't did tell Saakashavili not to use force several times. So, again, he screwed this up on his own.

I would also say the 'Russian aggression' label as overused.

However, a more disturbing trend is starting to emerge. Russian troops have been accompanied by 'irregulars' (what possible reason would an army like Russia's need to employ these?) The Russian presence in Georgia proper is being prolonged even after the Russian president has indicated it should not be.

So the impression is that the irregulars are rival ethnic groups with a grudge that have piggybacked on the Russian incursion, and are 'reaping booty'. Russian forces occupy areas that have nothing to do with the 'breakaway regions'.

Conclusions:

1) The Russian President has no control over his army. This is 'Hunt for Red October' on dry land.

2) The Russian President is being less than candid.

Again, and I'll type it slow so's you kids can follow along, Russia has been itching to give Georgia a good ass fucking and Georgia gave them that reason - nicely gift wrapped.

I found it difficult to differentiate your criticism from type of agenda-driven neocon residual Cold War knee-jerk criticism. I am now thinking it is not that type, but it's hard to tell.

Now, what I think you are saying is that various large world powers are engaged in a quiet struggle to ensure their respective inroads into the Caspian Sea petro-reserves, and it is a shame that a bunch of folk in some mountainous nowhere get jumped by the quasi-bandit military of some bozo who is supported by the US as a part of those machinations, thus giving Russia the opportunity to escalate the quiet struggle into a much more violent one: in general that what has happened to the civilian population situated, pawn-like, in what the West regards more as its 'pipeline easement' than a real place with real people really sucks, and these people's real wishes and human rights situation should garner more attention by all involved, including Russia, the EU and the US.

[edit] fwiw, given the above, the US picked the wrong bunch for the defense of the critical areas surrounding the pipeline. A pipeline through Armenia makes tons more geographic and economic sense, but it is much, much harder to a) get Turkey to finally fess up to the long ago Armenian mass-killlings so they might have better relations with Armenia and let the pipeline cross that border and b) to have Armenia and Azerbaijan amicably work out their differences regarding Nagorno-Karabakh to let the pipeline cross that border.

Nobody has disagreed that violence is ugly, or that there are many reasons to think the Russians are overreacting, but the relative difference between the way mikemc and 4:33 are carrying the conversation about who is to blame, and what you are doing is massive. You want everybody to agree with you. You don't care if the situation is a mess, if Russia had plenty of legitimate reasons to roll in, and if it's even possible that the west egged this thing on and now is "condemning" it.
