Need a Free (or real cheap) prog to sync music for video

Post by montrealbreaks » Thu Oct 21, 2004 3:41 pm

Hey all.

I know absolutely nothing (I mean NOTHING) about music for video. I good friend of mine wants me to compose some accompanying music to a film he made. He sent me a DVD with the final edited version, without music or audio. The edited film has a LOT of quick cuts that really define the flavour of the film - around one cut every 2 - 5 seconds.

I use a PC, NOT a mac. What I need:

1. A way to get that video off the DVD and onto my hard drive
2. A program to put an audio and video track together and get them synced
3. Preferably, I would like to compose with the video right there in the same timeline, so I could sync the musical events to the cuts. However, I could also compose in Live and just let it go (ignoring the cuts) if this isn't practical
4. I'm getting paid a pittance for this, I don't want to spend much money (or none at all preferably.)
5. A solution FAST (he needs this done in two weeks.

Any advice appreciated!

thanks!

Damn, I thought something like that existed!

Apparently it can be done in Cubase - I have an old version for the Mac, but it will take more than two weeks (and more than a few dollars) to upgrade...

What about ripping the video from DVD to the HD? That's my first step, and I don't know what I need...

Like I said, I know NOTHING about video.

Hi, Heres what you need....nearly!!

1) a program called DVDbackup at

http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/DVDbackup.html

nice and simple way to rip a DVD

2)Then get ReVision from http://www.grantedsw.com

This is a simple Rewire program that syncs Quicktime movies to Live,Reason etc.

Now the problem is im not sure how to convert the DVD (Audio TS) files into Quicktime.....

Can anyone help with this?

and revision is questionable in terms of accuracy.. if you wanted to work on something that involved a lot of quick and precise edits, revision aint it.

unfortunately, mac or pc, the only things i know of that do this do not fall into either the free or even-remotely-cheap categories. i really wish that weren't the case since Live is so nice for this kind of thing.

Yeah, I have decided to use Live rewired into Cubase SX2. I am gonna have to bite the bullet and upgrade my Cubase (I had NO intention of doing it, but...) It's a cost I didn't want to incur.

I switched from Mac to PC recently (mac trouble up the hoop!) and didn't know where to start. I used to use Cubase, and thought I would be able to get an old version crossgraded to the PC platform for free (or cheap)....

BUT, the good people at Steinberg won't support old versions with crossgrades, so I am out of luck and have to BUY an upgrade for a program I don't want just to finish a project for a friend.

Hell, that's what Friends are for I suppose.

Anyways, I will be rewiring Live into Cubase, and just running VSTis in Cubase directly.

Thanks for all the advice guys!!! I appreciate it!

;)

Will the Adobe Audition Demo version suffice for this job as you can do this sort of thing in Audition if you didn't know that already .

True, except i guess the demo would be save-disabled. I just made the upgrade to aa1.5 and i gotta say the new drag timestretch tool makes video sync work sooo much easier.
