failed to load audio unit "." (without any audioun

So lately I've been getting the message "Failed to load audio unit "." " upon trying to start Ableton and then it crashes - never seen this before Live 7.09 - deleting the preferences gets rid of the problem for one or two starts, then it happens again.

I currently have all AU and VST plugins moved to a different drive, so it isnt even trying to load any - any idea what the problem might be?

I'm going to jump back to 7.07 and see if that fixes it
