my mbp was replaced 5 (!!) times
Sure, but I doubt you can get a MAC as cheap as a PC for the same specshambone1 wrote:But seriously, folks... a Mac. They work out of the box without any tinkering/disabling/tweaking/etc.
Refurb Macbooks can be had for great prices from the Apple Store.
Get one. You'll never look back. There have been LOTS of PC>Mac converts on the forum, but I doubt if many go the other way.
back on topic, as you requested help with pc... (hoping this doesnt turn into a "Mac's VS PC thread")

I probably run into more issues from people "optimizing" their PC than anything else.
There's only four optimizations I recommend for a Windows box;
1) Set your page file to a fixed size (1.5 x your physical RAM), and move it off your OS drive/partition if possible
2) Change processor scheduling (Control panel/system/advanced/advanced) to background services
3) Turn off indexing on all drives
4) Turn off any power conservation or power management schemes
Also, defrag and dump temp files at least once a week- I do it every day.

my co-hort uses an ACER dual-core - has it partitioned with 2 different boot-ups: one for music, the other for general computing.
The music side's all tweaked (as mentioned in above post), lean and stripped down, never connects to internet with it, has worked without problems for past 12 months or so.
Only has about 5-6 background tasks running from start-up.

Live (yoghurt) - MBP- Circuit Bent Rampant Rabbit - Mongolian Nose Flute - 'The Marvelous Mechanical Mouse Organ' (on loan from Bagpuss) and a Swanee Whistle made from a used heroin syringe.

on a modern machine with over 3gb ram, adjusting the page file, and defragging will have almost zero effect on performance.duluxdog wrote:When I ran a Windows box I did a boatload of stuff. The most important was to adjust the page file size manually. There are loads of other little things you can do to the registry etc but it always seems like trying to polish a turd.
