If you're coming from Rock, & you have any affinity at all for fat-ass hip hop beats played FAST, & you want some MEAT with your meal, then may I suggest that bastard child Big Beat? This is the Rock music of the electronica world. Really fun, fast, huge, funky, ripping stuff. No woosies allowed!

Fluke's "Atom Bomb" is a good place to start; find it! It is, dare I say, the BOMB. Get the uncensored version. "Baby's got an atom bomb. A muthafuckin' atom bomb."

The Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive" & "Trip Like I Do" are absolute killers. Both from the album "Vegas".

The Chemical Brothers "Setting Sun" is massive.

Once you're hooked, you can move on to the really hard stuff: Omar Santana's Tricked Out! This stuff is so bad ass it will destroy your mind for all time. Brutal.

You get the idea. Everyone will call it crap, but they are wrong. 8)

If you want to keep some guitar jubblies in the mix maybe check out David Torn,, especially the spalttercell RMX record..
I'll also second the Amon Tobin recommendation..
As for pure electronic check out http://www.keithhillebrandt.com/ ... I pimp this guy every chance i get
From these very boards Pitch Black might be worth a gander..
As well are lots of the folks that frequent these parts.. just start clicking on people signatures, all kinds of cool shit turn's up...

lot's of good stuff mentioned here.

Also worth to know a little: Venetian Snares (for the really glitched out broken beats).

Burnt Friedman (for the krutrock-dubby, jazzy side of electronic music).

I'd go for something a bit different. I may be coming at this from a more Eurocentric background. This is not very chronological.

Nice group of artists. I'm particularly fond of Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, & Throbbing Gristle.

I'll add Suicide into this mix & shake gently.

Yeah - I can't believe I missed Suicide. They are hugely important.

I've also got a feeling Burial should be on there. I'm not very clued up on the garage/jungle/urban/drum and bass side of things, though I do like this guy called 'Decoder' and another one called 'Photek' who make kind of edgy, ultra-dark drum and bass. I think they both around in the early-mid 90s.

C'mon. All of these selections can't be the Jimi Hendrix of the electronic world.

:?

Jimi was really really really really really good. Like almost flawless.

It is hard to compare someone who is a profoundly proficient & inspired instrumentalist/musician with anyone who is not. So who in electronic music can rock an instrument like Jimi? What instrument exclusive & unique to electronic music is equal to a guitar?

I guess I could propose that Brian Eno rocked the whole recording studio in a virtuosic way, but this is really stretching my Eno fanaticism to the limit!

I’m going to go with some I think should be fairly accessible for someone with an indy/rock background. It’s quite a jump form Jimi to Autechre. These are some that did it for me back in the day, that I think have also stood the test of time. They may be obvious, but I guess that’s why they are classics:
Underworld – Dubnobasswithmyheadman
Leftfield – Leftism
Fluke – Risotto
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Portishead – Dummy
Future Sound of London – Lifeforms

A few from this millennium:

Layo and Bushwacka – Nightmoves
UNKLE – Never, Never, Land
Trentemoller – Last Resort
Booka Shade – Movements / The Sun and the Neon Light

+1000!

Amon Tobin's work is, quite frankly, bordering on genius. 'Foley Room' is one of the best 'found sound' records I've ever heard in my life. Brilliant.

I am loving a few compilations from the Planet Mu back catalogue, and loads of stuff from the Leaf label. Oh, check out Warp Records, too.

To me this question feels weird, as you're just asking for the canonised groups again. You might like some artists on say WARP, but dislike the label as a whole. It's all really personal.

Electronic music is such a broad term it covers so so much. Do you like some of the bands you've mentioned? e.g. The Chemical Brothers have made a pretty good dj mix, which is always nice for digging deeper.

Anyway, some tips:

This is a list of some albums that mean a lot to me now.

Cluster - Zuckerzeit
Gas - Gas, Pop
Plastikman - Closer (put it in the cd player again after some hawtin fuss here on the forum)
Eine Kleine Nacht Musik (check out the promotional video here)
Various - Muting the Noise 01 (on Innervisions label)
Berghain 02 mixed by Marcel Dettmann

there are also some albums or mix cds (because a dj can be Hendrix too) I don't play so often, but I know I can always go back to them

The Sabres of Paradise - Haunted Dancehall
Cold Cut - Let Us Play
Dopplereffekt - Calabi Yau Space
Der Zyklus - Biometry
I-F - Mixed Up in the Hague Vol. 1
Biochip C - Inside (Chapter Two)

Then there's also my personal Big Canon

Orbital
Leftfield
LFO
Drexciya + all others AKA's
Early Tresor
Basic Channel
Chain Reaction
