How do I route MIDI out from a VST instrument?
How do I route MIDI out from a VST instrument?
If I setup a VSTi on MIDI track 1, then on MIDI track 2, I can select MIDI track 1 as input. However, this doesn't get me the MIDI out of the VSTi, only the MIDI in on track 1. Is this possible in Live? I can see from the manual, audio routing is possible, but not MIDI?
Some VSTi have a MIDI out that I can't figure out how to use in Live. I can if I place the VSTi inside EnergyXT and use that.

Perhaps this should be posted as a feature suggestion.
For owners of VSTi's such as Groove Agent (whose usefulness is increased many times through this function) this would be a welcome addition.
At current for duties where I need to record Groove Agent's MIDI output it is necessary to interrupt my workflow in live and instead launch Cubase SX.
Cheers !

For now you can get energy xt, put GA inside and route midi out to the vsti you want inside xt, this works!jasefos wrote:Perhaps this should be posted as a feature suggestion.

If you dont want to register xt, you can record your audio on a audiotrack in live and later work on it, but until you registered xt you will not be able to reopen your project!

FEATURE REQUEST: MIDI Out from VSTi's
energy XT is a nice product but not very intuitive. I hope that Ableton considers this an important feature to add. It sure would make drum programming easier with the Groove Agent's excellent patterns and the excellent sounds of Drumkit from Hell or similar VSTi's.

I couldn't agree with you more !
Groove Agent's MIDI output capabilities are a superb starting point for your own patterns as well.
When you couple its ability to generate MIDI output in realtime with some tricky automation to modify the patterns played on the fly its creative potential is awesome. Not being able to capture this data is somewhat of a shame.
Groove Agent's MIDI output is significantly more flexible than similar plugins which rely purely on a library static MIDI files to play its own kit.
Dear Ableton's - it would be good to capture MIDI from VSTi's as well as physical MIDI inputs.

VSTi - MIDI Out support would be "excellent"
There were too many "excellents" in my last post, I apologize to the scrutinous readers and grammar majors. I have routinely found myself using Nuendo to record the MIDI patterns from the GM output of the Groove Agent and bringing them into Live as a MIDI file. The MIDI editing of Live is more intuitive for me than Nuendo's. I love the fold feature for editing MIDI drum tracks.
This isn't taking advantage of everything that the Groove Agent could be doing for me in Live. Like jASeFOs, I would like to be composing with it: easily selecting appropriate fills and patterns for different sections of a song. I always modify the patterns to fit the material and the patterns from the GA are an "excellent" starting place for some projects.
If anyone knows of a similar GM pattern library or VSTi please post here.

A good library of MIDI patterns comes with FXpansion's BFD ...
They are static but incredibly useful both within BFD and outside.
(The mega Acoustic kits of BFD are sensational as well)
Drum Kit From Hell I believe also comes with excellent selection of MIDI files (in addition to) but I don't own that baby ... yet.

There are no standard MIDI patterns distributed with Drum Kit From Hell Superior. There are a few demo MIDI files to listen to the various preset kits but no patterns.jasefos wrote:Drum Kit From Hell I believe also comes with excellent selection of MIDI files (in addition to) but I don't own that baby ... yet.
I remember briefly investigating online MIDI pattern libraries for sale and not being very impressed. This is a fascinating website for finding sounds on the web (not patterns): http://www.findsounds.com/types.html
